

He was on the crew as a Top Turret Gunner of the B-17F #41-24432 "Danellen", 401st Bomb Squadron, 91st Bomb Group, Heavy, 8th Air Force. His plane was shot down by Major Josef Priller, German Air Force, JG26 after a bombing raid over a German aircraft factory at Romilly-sur-Seine, France. Only one crew member survived when he was able to parachute out of the plane. All the other crew members were killed upon being hit or when the plane crashed.
Technical Sergeant Bacon was from Baltimore, MD and was 24 years old. He enlisted in the Army Air Force on September 16, 1941, in Baltimore prior to the start of World War II. Prior to his enlistment, he was employed in the production of glass and glass products.
His remains were positively identified after the Army's Casualty and Mortuary Affairs Operations Division tracked down living family members whose DNA matched with Bacon's.
TSgt Bacon will be arriving at BWI on Friday, September 12th. On the tarmac to welcome their uncle home are his nephews, nieces, and their family and friends. Joining the family is the military escort, members of the BWI Airport family, the knights of Columbus, and the Maryland Patriot Guard Riders.
Honors will be conducted as the Dignified Transfer occurs from the plane to the hearse at the airport.
After processing from the airport to the funeral home, there will be a brief period to pay respects at the funeral home Friday, September 12 starting approximately around 6PM, depending on any flight delays.

Burial will full honors will take place 2PM, Tuesday, September 16 at Baltimore National Cemetery, 5501 Frederick Ave, Catonsville, MD 21228.
