Michael Anthony Bateman passed away peacefully on June 1, 2026, at Gilchrist, Howard County at the age of 75. Born September 2, 1950, in Baltimore, Maryland, Michael lived a life marked by dedication to his family, career, and community.
His academic journey began at Saint Mark School in Catonsville followed by Mount Saint Joseph High School and continued at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC), where he completed his undergraduate studies. He later earned a Master's Degree from Johns Hopkins University. His education laid the foundation for an impressive 43-year career in banking. Starting as an Assistant Manager trainee, Michael rose through the ranks to become a Senior Vice President - a true "Banker's Banker". His professional achievements were numerous, including countless sales awards reflecting his expertise and commitment to excellence. In addition to his banking career, he shared his knowledge by teaching Economics at what is now Stevenson University for several years.
Michael was a devoted husband "Cootie" to Renee Lash Bateman for 52 years. He was a proud father to Halley Price (Adam), and Drew Michael Bateman. He treasured his role as grandfather "Mick' to Alexander, Helen, and Zachary Price. He is also survived by his brothers Tim Bateman (Jilda), Brian Bateman (Terri), and sixteen cherished nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother Neil.
A man of many talents and passions, Michael was known for his quick wit, sharp sense of humor, athleticism, and artistic abilities. He found joy in drawing and hardscape gardening - creating beautiful spaces that brought peace to those around him. His backyard rock gardens adjacent to the Trolly 9 Line in Catonsville became an oasis for his family and a visual delight for the community. He designed and constructed a Memorial Garden at Christian Temple Church, leaving behind a lasting legacy of beauty and reflection.
Michael's love for classic automobiles was matched only by his appreciation for all types of music and love of the beach. A voracious reader and avid traveler, he embraced life with curiosity and enthusiasm. In addition to these pursuits, he dedicated over a decade to coaching youth sports in his community - 12 years coaching travel and club soccer and five years coaching baseball - instilling teamwork and discipline in young athletes.
Those who knew him will remember him not only for his accomplishments but also for the warmth he brought into their lies. His memory will live on through the gardens he cultivated, the lessons he imparted, and the laughter he shared.
May Michael's legacy continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him. Family will receive friends at a Celebration of Life Monday, June 29 and Tuesday, June 30 from 5-8PM, with sharing of memories both nights at 7PM at Sterling-Ashton-Schwab-Witzke Funeral Home of Catonsville, Inc., 1630 Edmondson Avenue, Catonsville, MD 21228.
