April 8, 1931-December 2, 2019
Herman was born in Ireton, Iowa to Herman, Sr. and Jennie Schiebout. Herman was the 9th of
12 children in birth order, Ferdinand, Henry, Johanna, Geraldine, Anne, Benjamin, Christian,
Abraham, Herman, Adrianna, Lena, and William. Raised on a farm east of Ireton, Herman rode
a horse and buggy to the Christian School in Ireton, and later completed high school at
Northwestern Academy in Orange City, Iowa.
Herman met Betty in Sheldon, Iowa where they were married in 1952. Shortly after their
wedding, Herman was drafted into the Army, to serve for two years at the end of the Korean
War. It was during this time that their first daughter Cheryl Beth was born. After being honorably
discharged from the Army, Herm and Betty began farming in Jasper, Minnesota until 1960 when
they moved to Denver, Colorado. They had another daughter, LIsa Ann, whom they lost in 1959
at the age of two years. After moving to Denver, three more daughters were born, Janiece Sue,
Dawn Renee, and Janelle Lyn. Herman first worked in Denver delivering lumber as a truck
driver for Kroonenberg Lumber Co. He later became a carpenter, building both houses and
commercial buildings including the Denver Firestation #21 at the corner of E. Virginia and S.
Franklin on the NE corner of Washington Park.
Herman loved building, remodeling basements, kitchens, and building cabinetry. He loved doing
finish work as a carpenter and built cedar chests for Cheri, Janiece, and Dawn. Aside from
building, Herm loved hunting, fishing, and camping. There are many fond memories of family
camping trips throughout Colorado, fishing trips to Minnesota with family, traveling to Canada
for an annual weeklong fishing trip with his buddies, and deer-hunting in the fall. In retirement,
Herm and Betty enjoyed spending time each week in the summer with their camper trailer
parked at Uncle Bill’s property above Bailey, Colorado.
In spite of great sadness at Janelle’s passing in 1989, Herm and Betty displayed an amazing
strength of faith and trust in their Lord. Life was full of love and laughter, and a cheerful
welcome with the backdoor open to friends and family who stopped by for a cup of coffee or
Sunday dinner. After a long battle with Alzeheimers, Betty passed away in 2017. Herm
continued to display his solid faith in the Lord, and enjoyed time with his children and
grandchildren. An old friendship that developed into love led Herm to marry Ruth Rosendale in
the summer of 2017. In September, 2019, Herm was diagnosed with Stage 4 lung cancer and
the Lord called him to his eternal home 10 weeks later. Herman is survived by his wife, Ruth
Rosendale, two brothers and two sisters, three daughters, eight grandchildren, and four
great-grandchildren. Truly, Herman has passed on a legacy of faith to his descendents as he
proclaims Great is Thy Faithfulness, O God!
