Anna "Ann" Elaine Argall Johns, age 92, of Bow Mar, CO, passed to her Lord on Friday, October 8, 2021. She was born in Denver, CO on November 28, 1928 to Nina Gratz Argall and William Arthur Argall. Ann’s early years were spent in Denver except for an extended stay in Rifle, CO where her father was a gold miner. Ann graduated from South High School in 1947 where she had met the love of her life, Robert (Bob) F. Johns. Bob served as President of their Senior Class and Ann was the Vice President. They went on to Colorado University in Boulder, CO where Ann was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority and graduated with degrees in Elementary Education and English. Ann and Bob married on March 17, 1951. She taught school in Boulder until the birth of her first of four sons, Jeffrey, soon to be followed by Frank, William (Bill), and David.
Ann and Bob built a home and moved into the Bow Mar community in 1956 where they would remain. Tennis was a family sport and Ann went on to become a USTA coordinator for Junior Interclub Tennis and a certified umpire. Her station wagon was always full, transporting her boys to regional tournaments. In the winter, the family skied together, mostly at Winter Park, near their family home in Fraser. Ann’s garden of 130 prize roses was well known in Bow Mar, and of course she was active in the Bow Mar Garden Club. Ann served as the Bow Mar Town Clerk for 15 years. Ann was active in the Junior League of Denver and played many roles in their plays at the Phipps Auditorium and as they toured Denver Public Schools. Black Labrador retrievers were equal family members and she made sure they got many trophies and ribbons of recognition in American Kennel Club field trials.
Many family members and friends loved hiking with Ann! She climbed 40 of the 54 Colorado 14ers and even made a decent attempt of Mt. Rainier! Ann and Bob travelled many world destinations, often hiking and biking with many friends wherever they went. They also played many rounds of golf together. Ann also continued to enjoy tennis, playing tennis at “the bubble” into her 80s.
The Johns boys started attending Young Life (younglife.org) in the late 1960s and Ann quickly investigated the organization, receiving Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior in 1970. This, she would confess to all, completely changed their lives. As God would have it, Ann had some very dear friends who were starting a Community Bible Study (communitybiblestudy.org) and invited her to be a part of their team. She attended her first national teaching director’s conference in 1971. Ann was a Community Bible Study Teaching Director for 30 years in the SW Denver Area. She was passionate in teaching God’s Word to as many women as she could to help them discover that the joy, peace and love that completed and filled her was available to them also.
It didn’t take long for Ann to also reach out into hospitals and prisons. She led a Community Bible Study group at Federal Correctional Institute Englewood. Ann was a well-known chaplain at Swedish Medical Center for 33 years and was known to pray at all hours of the night. The Christian Women’s Club loved to have Ann come speak on many occasions, as did the women of St. James Presbyterian Church. Ann became a national speaker, often threading God’s message with many hilarious stories about her four sons, the dogs, mountains climbed, and their many world travels. Ann and Bob were members of Faith Bible Chapel South for several years where they often taught Sunday School. Ann and Bob supported many other Christian groups in the area, being especially grateful for Young Life.
Ann was preceded in death by her ‘Mr. Wonderful’ husband, Bob, and her dear older sister, Ruth Astuno. She is survived by her four sons, Jeffrey (Kitty, deceased), Frank (Tina), Bill (Vanessa), David (Jeannie), along with 12 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
