SEPTEMBER 25, 1949 – JUNE 14, 2018
You remember our neighbor, Barb – the woman with the long finger nails, walking her dog, mowing lawns, sewing clothes and Christmas decorations. She was a good neighbor, sometimes cranky, but never the less a friend you could trust to be honest and strongly opinionated…
Well, Barb died quietly on the morning of June 14th after a 6-month encounter with pancreatic cancer. She was lucid and bright to the end of her journey. In her last few weeks she planned her own funeral, arranged to give away most of her treasured possessions, and put her personal affairs in order. During this time she demonstrated remarkable courage and steady determination to be in charge of her own life, right to the end.
To express her appreciation to neighbors, friends and family she organized two lunches on the town – one at C.B. & Potts and a farewell ‘bash’ at Maggiano’s Italian Restaurant. She also enjoyed eating special treats from Kneader’s; Cheddar’s, KFC (chicken tenders), and scoops of butter pecan ice cream. She loved cooking in her Cucina and sharing dishes with friends.
As an adopted daughter, perhaps her greatest thrill was to be reunited to her birth mom Ruth and her sister, Carol Fellows. These three enjoyed a joyous reunion in California several years ago.
Barb’s father, Lester Stills, was a captain of Denver Fire Department 21. She had deep respect for our first responders, and enjoyed annual calendars of firefighters 😊. In a tribute to her Dad she wrote a heartfelt obituary ending with: “May you soar with the eagles” … And now it is time for Barb to soar with eagles, to be reunited in spirit with her friends and family, cats and dogs who have preceded her in passing over to the great beyond.
Barb’s end-of-life motto is:
“Life’s journey is not to arrive safely at the grave in a
well-preserved body,
But rather to skid in sideways totally worn out shouting -
Holy shit, what a ride!”
