was born October 31st, 1934 in Shickley, NE. He was the fifth of six kids born to Lee and Emma
Steider, and growing up on the farm in Shickley he learned the values of faith, family, hard work and
having fun.
After high school Del helped his brother Lowell farm, but his favorite part of farming with Lowell was
playing with Lowell and Bernice’s girls. He loved being Uncle Del and playing with his nieces. After
farming, Del moved to Heston, KS where he became a long haul trucker and drove an 18 wheeler.
One day, he was cruising through a park in Newton, KS with his cousin Daryl, his brother Leonard,
and Leonard’s fiancé, Jan. Daryl stopped to chat with a young lady he knew, who just so happened
to be sitting with her friend, Eva Kauffman. The group decided to go get a coke, and Eva quickly
slid into the backseat of the car next to “the cute one,” Delmer.
One thing lead to another and Del and Eva were married in Newton, KS in August 1962. Right after
they got married, they moved to Denver and Del went to work at Public Service Company where he
worked for the next thirty two years. Two little girls, Shelley and Renae came along a few years later,
and from then on, the focus of Del’s life was providing a great life for his wife and girls.
Del worked hard, but he also liked to have fun with his wife, his girls, and with great friends, Pat and
Daisy Masoner and their family. He could make a boring Saturday morning fun by throwing his kids
into the car and drive to Red Rocks to play, or make breakfast by a creek in the mountains. He
loved to laugh, play cards, tell “Nebraska jokes,” fish, and eat! Del sure did love his sweets and a
nightly midnight bowl of ice cream was one of his guilty pleasures.
Although Del retired from Public Service after 32 years, he continued to work until the day he had a
stroke in April of 2021. Life radically changed for Del after that stroke, but he worked hard to get
back what the stroke took from him. Del wanted more than anything he wanted to be Eva’s
caretaker, not the other way around. Two bouts of Covid, the most recent in March of this year,
really took a toll on his health and independence, and bouncing back became harder and harder.
The last few months of his life were a challenge and by the time he passed away, Del was tired and
ready for heaven.
Del is survived by his wife Eva, his two daughters Shelley Davis (Ron), Renae Joiner (Aaron),
grandchildren Danielle, Jacob, Vince, Vanessa and Ashley, sister MaDonna Swartzendruber, and
many nieces and nephews. Del is preceded in death by his father Lee Steider, mother Emma,
brothers Lowell, Kenneth, Lester and Leonard.
A celebration of Del’s life will be held at 11am on Monday, July 28th at Olinger Chapel Hill Mortuary
and Cemetery, 6601 S. Colorado Blvd., Centennial, CO. Burial and Reception to follow.
