He is preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Betty Willard and Bethene Chrislip; and brothers, Alan Chrislip and Wes Chrislip. Doug is survived by his wife of 18 years, Donna Kay (Peery) Chrislip of Centennial, CO; son, Mark (Diane) Chrislip of Eudora, KS; daughter, Kathy (Mark) Darling of Minneapolis, MN; son, Kevin (Charla) Chrislip of Tulsa, OK; step-daughter, Lori (Ordy Ploehn) Martin of Grand Junction, CO; and step-daughter, Lyndsey (Peter) White of Portland, OR; 9 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; his brothers, Larry (Linda) Chrislip of Grand Prairie, TX and Sherman (Eloise) Chrislip of Denver, CO; his first wife, Donna L. Dedrick of Overland Park, KS; and numerous nieces and nephews and other loving family and friends.
Doug and his wife, Donna Kay, met on a Delta flight in July 1997. They were married September 2nd, 2000. Doug’s entrepreneurial spirit began developing at the age of 9, when he purchased four peanut machines and placed them in businesses in McPherson, KS, where his family moved when he was in 3rd grade. At age 11, he had his first paper route. When he was 14, he went to work at Houghton’s Bakery in McPherson, where he began to learn the bakery business. In this way he contributed to the family income. Doug married Donna Parr in McPherson on June 20th, 1954. At that time he was working for Dillon’s Grocery Store as a pastry foreman. At the age of 22, Doug and his brother, Sherman, owned their own bakery, the Chrislip Bake Shop, in Salina, KS. The main attraction was Doug’s decoration of cakes in the window of the shop. An electrical fire at the shop forced its closure and resulted in Doug working at Holsum Bread Bakery Plant in Salina. His career in the food industry had begun. He went from being a doughboy to president of KWIK Shop convenience stores, to owner of four Sub ‘n’ Stuff Sandwich Shops, in Tulsa, OK, to marketing director of Mobil Oil Australia, to western regional sales manager for Chester Fried Chicken. During his baking days, Doug was president of the Kansas Bakers Association and was instrumental in the then-Kansas governor, Robert Docking, proclaiming a week in July of 1969 as “Kansas Baker’s Week”. He moved to Denver in 2000 when he and Donna married. His work in Denver was with Kd Supply, Chester Fried sales development. Throughout his career, Doug greeted his co-workers and clients with a smile, a handshake and often a clever joke. He retired at the age of 81, with 60 years of work history. Doug suffered a stroke in July of 2016, leaving him physically disabled, but mentally sharp, positive in spirit and strong in faith. He had a keen interest in other people. He loved photography, gardening, hunting, fishing, bowling, and tanning at the pool. Doug was an avid fan of the Colorado Rockies, Dallas Cowboys, Kansas City Chiefs, Denver Broncos, Air Force Falcons, and Kansas Jayhawks. His other favorite college team was the Oklahoma State Cowboys, except when they were playing KU. Doug treasured his family and friends. We will all miss this beloved man.
A Visitation for Doug was held Friday, January 25, 2019 at Olinger Chapel Hill Mortuary & Cemetery. A Funeral Service began at 11:00 am, Saturday, January 26, 2019 at Littleton United Methodist Church, followed immediately by a reception.
