Duane transitioned peacefully, surrounded by the love of his family and friends, after a decade long battle with cancer. Duane was always optimistic and gave everything he had in this fight. His strength and resolve got him through so many medical trials and his family and friends can take comfort that he is finally at peace. He was a man to be admired for his kindness, patience and generosity. He was a warrior who faced every challenge head-on.
In his youth, Duane excelled as an athlete in both baseball and football and was featured several times in local newspapers highlighting his accomplishments. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed camping and fishing. He earned top grades in school and graduated from Bolingbrook High School in 1975.
He was highly respected as a home builder in several states over a long and successful career as he moved from site superintendent to Chief Operating Officer and Owner Representative. He was an effective leader. He had many meaningful friendships among the associates and colleagues he worked with over the years.
A cancer diagnosis in 2014 did not slow him down as he worked through treatment and a few serious complications. He was free of cancer for 10 years until a new diagnosis in 2025. He never complained and his courage and bravery were so admirable to those around him. His witty sense of humor and compassion for others were also a big part of his personality. He was a person of great character.
Duane’s memory will be cherished by all who were touched by his kindness and strength.
Duane is survived by his wife of 25 years Dana Cerniglia, his daughter Kristen Kuss, his son Noah Cerniglia, stepson Taylor Hirsh, stepfather Gil Ellis and brothers Randy Rutenbeck and Bryan Ellis, grandchildren Kobe, Remington (Remi) and Valentina, Nieces Stormie-Lyn Buterbaugh and Ashlee Hinkler, Nephew Nathan Rutenbeck, Cousin Bev (Miles), and step siblings Don and Debbie Demmel.
