Elmer was born in Strasburg, Colorado and grew up on a family farm experiencing the Dust Bowl and Great Depression. He married Dorothy Murra in 1941 and they lived in Denver and Littleton for more than 50 years. Dorothy passed away in 2003. They have three children, Geraldine, Denise, and Kenneth., six grandchildren, and 12 great grandchildren.
Elmer and Dorothy enjoyed square dancing, bowling, and most of all camping. With Elmer’s retirement from Gates, they toured the country for 12 years in an Airstream trailer visiting all 48 states and Canada. This gave Elmer time for fishing and a new hobby, wood carving. It also gave him an outlet for another passion, tinkering and fixing anything mechanical. Many summers were spent on the ranch of a friend in Montana. When they gave up full-time RVing Elmer took up the pen in front of his computer and wrote stories of the times and people he knew as a boy on the plains of eastern Colorado. These memories were published in PRAIRIE TIMES (Deer Trail, CO).
Elmer spent his final years living independently and being active in his church, Ascension Lutheran in Littleton. He enjoyed visits by his family and friends and embraced modern technology as he exchanged daily emails with his children, other family members, and friends. He will be remembered as a good, generous, forgiving man who was always ready to lend a hand and offer a positive word.
