Ernest “Ernie” Foerster passed away on March 25, 2022, at the age of 74 in Castle Rock, Colorado. His two-year battle with brain cancer showed his courage in facing life challenges with humility, determination, acceptance, and a sense of humor. Despite his circumstances, Ernie served as an inspiration to those that knew him best and stayed strong until the end. He was ready to “kick butt”.
Dad, Daddy, Ern, Ernie, and Papa as he was affectionally known was born on October 11, 1947, to Edna and Ernest Foerster in St. Paul, Minnesota. It is also in Minnesota where he met the love of his life, Elaine; and who remained by his side until the very end. They celebrated their 53rd wedding anniversary in 2021.
Ernie graduated from the University of Minnesota with a degree in mathematics and pursued a life-long career as an actuary. His desire to be “exact” and “calculated” was a trait that was readily recognizable. His only major miscalculation was his early departure from our earthly bounds. He was a quieter man and when he spoke, you listened.
Ernie had great love for the game of golf that carried on throughout his life. He loved the outdoors and especially landscaping and working in his gardens. He was a master gardener. His eye for detail and design was special. Ernie loved to play games especially card games. It was 500 and cribbage with the adults and Uno with the grandchildren. When it was the NFL football season, Ernie emersed himself in fantasy football and NFL pick ‘em challenges. He was competitive and the Purple People Eaters were often at or near the top of the leaderboard. He also loved March Madness for all its madness and bracket challenges. He really enjoyed movies often watching them many times over. Old westerns were some of his favorites. He also had a thing for the latest in tech, always upgrading! The weather was always on his mind and the first snows each year brought excitement.
Ernie also enjoyed the holidays and embracing the spirit of them. Whether it was doing an incredible pumpkin carving for Halloween; to the traditional turkey and watching football at Thanksgiving; from collecting Santa Clauses with mom, eating Christmas goose, and drinking spiked eggnog; to hiding easter eggs for the grandkids at Easter; he embraced it all including the infamous penguin wars.
Ernie is survived by his ever-loving wife, Elaine. He was dad to his son Eric (Margie), and daughter Emily (Jim). He was Papa to his grandchildren Natalie, Luke, Amy, Ben, Noah, and Matthew. He is preceded in death by his parents, Edna and Ernest. He leaves behind a sister (Nancy), and two brothers (Ron and Kerry) along with several nieces and nephews. Ollie, Sophie, and Mindy, the family’s beloved and sometimes mischievous cats will also be amiss without him.
He will be missed dearly but never forgotten.
