Gerald “Jerry” Edward Young, 86, of Denver, passed away on May 23, 2019 in Centennial, Colorado. A proud husband, father, uncle, grandfather, great grandfather and friend, passed with his family and friends at his side.
Born August 13th, 1932 in Seattle, Washington to Theodore and Phyllis Young, Jerry grew up in Glacier, Washington where his Father was a Forest Ranger and his Mother ran a bed and breakfast. It was here he developed his love for the great outdoors and animals.
After his parents divorced he moved to Seattle where he assumed his lifelong demonstration of caring for others by taking jobs in his teens to support his mother, sister Margaret and brother Richard.
He met the love of his life Janet Edwards in 1947 at a carnival where he stole a kiss and later that evening advised his mother he had met the girl he was going to marry. They were married on Valentine’s Day in 1952 and celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary earlier this year. Jerry and Janet had seven children, Joseph, Jerranette (husband Larry Miller), John, Jackie, Julie, James (wife Jessi Young) and Jennifer.
Jerry adored his fifteen Grandchildren; Becky Miller, Travis Miller, Emily Miller, Jessica Dalessandro, Will Mompher, Wade Mompher Trent Johni, Chris Conger, Michael Conger, Sara Conger, Anastasia Young, Colton Young, Lilly Kurtz, Logan Kurtz and Lawson Kurtz.
Nothing brought him greater joy then his 11 great grandchildren Ashley Singh, Jordyn Tomlinson, Mackenzie Miller, Jeffery Mompher, Michael Mompher, Noah Sadler, Tayvin Conger, Teagen Conger, Tanner Conger, Mathew Conger, Paige Conger,
Jerry was an icon for responsibility and hard work. At one point in his life he worked three jobs to support his growing family. His professional career in insurance claims began in 1962 when he started as a trainee adjuster with Transport Indemnity Company. He became the youngest ever Branch Manager in the company’s history. His career took him from Seattle to Calgary, Omaha, Portland, Atlanta and finally to Denver where his family settled in 1979. In 1990 he founded G.E. Young & Company which grew into a highly respected independent adjusting and later Third Party Administration Company. He cherished his employees like family. He earned a national reputation as one of the leading minds in transportation claims and earned multiple awards throughout his career. He retired in 1997 after his son James purchased the business and carried on his legacy.
Jerry loved the outdoors including camping, hunting and fishing. He was once on record for taking down the largest moose in Alberta, Canada. In retirement he and Janet took splendor in traveling across the country in their motor home. This included one trip along the Alcan Highway which was a lifelong dream of Jerry’s.
Jerry was known for the love of his family, integrity, and his endless sense of humor. Most of all he was a beacon of kindness. His acts of kindness are woven throughout his life, whether caring for his large family, rescuing a cat or being a friend to an elderly person in need. He was always selflessly there for others with a smile, a joke and a shoulder to lean on.
He is survived by Janet, in addition to the above, he is survived by his sister-in-law Juanita Young, nephew Jeffrey Young and nieces; Terry Ingram, Wendy Van Orden and Holly Arie and their children and grandchildren, Katelyn, Lauren, Dakota, Micah, Ian, Morgon, Jake, Mathew, Aubrey and Madison.
