Irene Barlow of McEwen, Tennessee, was born Mable Irene Hurt on March 4, 1933. She preferred the name Irene and was affectionately known as "Aunt Renee" by her nieces and nephews. Irene and her family moved to Nashville in her early teens and then on to Cookeville, Tennessee, just prior to her senior year. It was difficult having to move at that time in her life, but the Lord had plans for her to meet her lifelong love, Ray Barlow. At the age of 18, they were married at Bethel Nazarene Church in Nashville. After Ray's two years in the army, they followed his dream of moving west and chose Denver, Colorado, where Irene had several uncles. There, she worked at Gates Rubber Factory for five years before the couple started a family and she became a stay-at-home mom. Irene enjoyed knitting, gardening, fishing in the Colorado mountains, and sightseeing. Her love of traveling took her all over North America and Europe. She was a longtime member of Denver First Church of the Nazarene and taught children's Sunday School there for over 30 years. Irene passed away peacefully on May 9, 2026, in Littleton, Colorado, at the age of 93.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Insco Hurt and Rebecca (Dunn), and by her husband, Ray. Irene is survived by her three children: Dennis (Lewessa) Barlow of Madison Heights, VA; Pam Holler of Denver, CO; and Amy (Jon) Slack of Littleton, CO; and grandchildren: Devin (Kyla) Slack of Englewood, CO; and Connor (Kelly) Slack of Littleton, CO.
