James Edgar Carpenter
August 5, 1933 – April 5, 2021
Jim was born to Medray and Jamie Carpenter in a farm house near Pritchett, Colorado.
He rose to the rank of Lieutenant in the United States Navy and after several active and reserve duty tours he was honorably discharged on September 21, 1967.
He earned his Juris Doctor Degree from the University of Colorado in 1957. He was a Law Partner with Caulkins, Kramer, Grimshaw & Carpenter from 1960 to 1969.
He then became President and Chief Executive Officer of Empire Savings, Building & Loan Association, E.S.L. Corporation and served as a Director of the Federal Home Loan Bank of Topeka.
After retirement, he became an Investor, Rancher, Developer, Horseman, Horse Master, Trail Finder, Map Maker, Yacht Owner and Captain.
A 35 year member of the Roundup Riders of the Rockies, he found and developed horse trails for 13 years and earned most of the awards the Ride offered. He served as President of the Ride in 2000 and 2001.
He also developed and led a spring ride called the “Rim to River Ride”, where in the spring of each year, a small group of excellent riders travelled to many locations in the Desert Southwest to ride difficult trails into many of the most beautiful and historic areas.
He truly “Lived by the side of the road and was a friend to man”. He will be missed by many.
He leaves behind his wife of 48 years, Zella Jane Carpenter, his daughter Jane Elizabeth Carpenter, his brother Kenneth M. Carpenter, his sister Charlene Bone, sister-in-law Paula Carpenter, brother-in-law Steve Bone, 4 nieces and 1 nephew.
