James Winston McAnally

On November 13, 2021, this earthly world lost a great humanitarian and family man with the passing of James (Jim) Winston McAnally. He was surrounded by his loving family until the end. Jim is preceded in death by his parents Claude Willis McAnally, Jr. and Bertha McAnally.

Jim was born on October 27, 1936 in La Junta Colorado. Soon after his birth, his family moved to Trinidad, Colorado where he attended school and excelled in athletics. Jim decided at an early age that he wanted to be an engineer so after high school graduation in 1954, he attended the University of Colorado in Boulder where he earned an Electrical Engineering degree. In 1956, he married Elsielea Flynn, whom he met in the 5th grade and dated thru high school and college.

His career began at Martin Marietta in 1959 as a design engineer for electrical systems for ICBMs. Jim steadily advanced in a career marked by outstanding technical achievement and increasing levels of management and executive leadership. Jim always felt like his success came from old fashioned work ethic and honesty. He always preached, “Do the right thing”. In 1993, Jim became President of Martin Marietta Astronautics and then Lockheed Martin Space Systems, overseeing the Denver operations. After numerous Professional Awards and career successes, he chose to retire in 1997.

Jim spent his years in retirement giving back to the community by delivering Meals on Wheels, serving on the CU Engineering Executive Board and many other community positions. His highlight in retirement was spending time with his family and especially his grandkids. He loved to golf, attend the Bronco games, and enjoy the mountains.

Jim is survived by his wife of 65 years, Elsielea and his daughter Jamie Horacek (Mark) and his son Logan McAnally (Sharon). He is also survived by his brothers Claude McAnally III (Cathy) and Ron McAnally; his niece Kristy Brady (Ed), nephew Craig McAnally (Denise) and 5 grandchildren: Mitch, Luke, Kaylea, Nathan and Jordyn.
