James D. Wickenden passed away January 27, 2017 at the Sunrise at Orchard Assisted Living Home in Centennial, Colorado. Jim, often called "Wick" by his friends, was 90 years old, having been born in Danbury, Connecticut, in 1926. He was born to Henri Robert Wickenden and his wife Julia Davies Wickenden, who were also parents to H. Robert Wickenden Jr. and Margaret Wickenden, Jim's elder siblings who are also deceased.
Jim was a member of the Army Air Corps and trained for service for his country; just as he was about to be deployed on his first assignment, the war ended and he was released from active duty. He then attended Trinity College in Connecticut, where he obtained his undergraduate degree in business administration.
An avid ski buff, Jim moved to Denver where he met and married Esther K. Sandquist of Sauk Rapids, Minnesota. They had two children, Karin Wickenden Sherry, now of Centennial, Colorado, and Lisa Wickenden Charles, now of Arlington, Massachusetts.
In Colorado, Jim received his Masters degree in business administration from Denver University, and worked for General Business Systems, then Western Empire Life Insurance Company, then Financial
Programs Inc., a division of Gates Rubber Company. He completed his career as President of Standard Mutual Life Insurance Company of Lawrence, Kansas.
Jim loved skiing and backpacking the mountains of Colorado, especially, and enjoyed natural beauty all across the country and around the world. Sailing was also a favorite hobby; Jim loved being on the water in lakes and reservoirs, and was thrilled to sail on longer ocean journeys with his friend John Larson. He was a loving husband and father, a fine brother and son, and a wonderful grandfather. In addition to Karin and Lisa, he will be greatly missed by his son-in-law David Charles, and by grandsons Colin Sherry and Dylan Charles.
