Jay lived in Littleton, Colorado, for many years. He also spent time living in Duluth, Minnesota, and Prescott, Arizona where he attended college. He earned his teaching certificate through Yavapai Community College and Northern Arizona University and taught algebra to middle school students in Prescott, Arizona. The longest job he held was as a sales associate with L.L. Johnson Distributing Company.
Jay lived life as though there were no rules—and he ignored most of them! He had a free spirit and a unique way of seeing the world. He loved motorcycles and e-bikes, classic rock music, dogs, traveling, and history. He had a quick sense of humor and always seemed to have an interesting story to tell.
In the last few years of his life, Jay greatly appreciated the time he spent with his AA 12-step friends and mentors. He valued their friendship, guidance, and support and made an effort to live by that way of life.
Jay is survived by his sister, Judy Hammerlund; brothers Jerry Johnson (Mariola) and Jim Johnson (Judy); nieces Heidi Troutman (Kenny), Amy Bozek (Steven), and Lauren Johnson; and nephews Andy Hammerlund, Ryan Johnson, and David Szuster.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Leonard and Patricia Johnson, and his younger sister, Jean Johnson Mudgett.
Jay will be remembered for his independent spirit, his humor, his stories, and the many experiences he shared with the people who knew him.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Grace Point Community Church, 90 E Orchard Rd, Centennial, Colorado 80121, on October 3, 2026, at 10:00 am.
