Marcia Lee McBride, daughter of Neil and Agatha Hammond, was born in the Village of Potsdam, New York on February 2, 1942. Did you know that Marcia had a twin brother, Paul D. Hammond? However, his birthday was February 1, 1942. Paul was born just before midnight and Marcia was born just after midnight. Marcia often complained about being born on Groundhog Day.
Marcia passed away on the morning of December 1, 2023 at AdventHealth Littleton Hospital.
Marcia and Paul attended school in the state of New York. They graduated from North High School in Syracuse in 1960. She was accepted at the University of Rochester’s Department of Nursing and began a three year Registered Nurse program in August of 1960.
Marcia and Mary Jane (Harrington) Wood had rooms next to each other. They graduated in uniforms in 1963. Both found jobs as R.N.’s in January in Denver, Colorado. Marcia worked for Children’s Hospital and Mary Jane for Colorado Psychopathic Hospital. Marcia’s father, Neil, drove them to Denver and helped them find a small furnished apartment at 1100 Colorado Boulevard. Marcia also worked at Fort Logan Mental Health Hospital and St. Joseph’s Hospital.
Marcia met Duane (her husband) in 1963 at “Luncheoners” a single young adult group at Christ Methodist Church just up the street from her apartment. Besides the lunches/dinners, they also square danced, hiked, and camped.
Duane and Marcia married at the Christ Methodist Church on October 16, 1965. They lived in an apartment on York Street for a few months and then bought their home on Bellaire Way in 1966.
Their son, Michael McBride, was born September 26, 1968. When Mike went to elementary school full time, Marcia started day care in her home. She and Mary Jane took a class from Arapahoe County to be licensed in day care. The elementary schools listed them both as licensed in day care and R.N.’s so they were busy through the 70’s and into the 80’s. Marcia had to quit day care when she broke her ankle and had surgery to repair it.
Her next job was with the Colorado Orthopedic Physicians group. For 18 years she worked with insurance companies to get coverage for the doctors’ work.
Marcia enjoyed many activities: playing cards and other games, swimming, hiking, square dancing, cross country skiing, attending a monthly dinner group, spending time with friends and their families. One of her biggest loves was working on dolls of all kinds. She filled her home with many of her creations. Other dolls were given to those close to her.
After Duane and Marcia retired, they traveled on their own and with family members. They had a time share in Winter Park (in January). At times they would trade their time share so they could do more traveling.
Preceding Marcia in death were her parents, Neil and Agatha Hammond; her husband, Duane McBride and her brother, Paul Hammond. Sadly, her son, Michael McBride, died suddenly one month after her.
