Mrs. Stevenson was a favorite teacher of mine at GW.  I remember when her daughter got married and I also knew her son, John.

I remember her as our sponsor to the International Relations Club at George Washington High School in 1966,well done and will miss you very much.

My husband and I lived with the Stevenson Family in about 1957 taking care of Johnnie and Kay after school.  What a wonderful family they were!  Ken had such a funny sense of humor.  Johnnie used to say "yah, but" so Ken called him Yah,but the rabbit.  Marjorie was such a kind and wonderful person.  Her mother was a sweet little lady that I loved visiting with.  Kay was a studious young woman.  Once the children and I gave a surprise birthday party ot Marjorie and invited friends to come share the party.  Marjorie was so touched by those efforts and quite surprised at the vaiety of guests we invited.  We have always loved this family.

I have always admired my Aunt Margie.  She was intelligent and wise, and had many interests in common with my own, such as travel, history, and music.  I remember once as a teenager being enthralled by her playing Clair De Lune on the piano while visiting my family in Indiana. It was so deeply expressive and kindled my love for the music of Debussy.  Though she lived so far from us, I was always thrilled when she and my Uncle Ken paid us a visit, or vice versa because I knew we would be treated to stimulating conversation, music, and sometimes an evening at the theater.  I always felt part of their family, and I truly miss them.

I am sorry that I will not be able to attend the memorial service.  Because words cannot express my feelings at her loss, I have written and included in this guest book a piano piece entitled, "Reflections of Aunt Margie" which I  think expresses my memories of her.

Marjorie was my history teacher at George Washington H.S. She was a consummate teacher and sparked my interest in international affairs and travel. We have remained in contact throughout these many years as friends and I will always remember her fondly. Marjorie was so proud of her daughter Kay’s academic achievements, which no doubt were a result of Marjorie’s own example and influence. Kay and her children can be very proud to have had such a fine mother and grandmother.

Dear Kay and family,

Ron and I were so saddened to receive the news of the passing of your dear mother, Marjorie.  Not only was she part of the Forbess family, she became a treasured friend.  We met your mom back in 1995, while we were on a vacation in Colorado.  We had stopped to visit her sister, Virginia Banks in Boulder, Colorado and she invited Marjorie and Ken to join us for lunch.  It began many years of getting acquainted through letter writing.  We enjoyed visiting with her once again in 2005, this time in your home.  Your mom was always so cheerful and thoughtful, a very elegant and gracious lady.  May you be comforted in knowing how abundantly you showered your mom with tender, loving care, especially in her later years, after the loss of your dad.  She loved, and was so proud of her family!  We feel blest to have known Marjorie.  She was a very special lady, who will be missed greatly.

When I was in high school, Barbara, my step mother, was new to parenting a teenager.  She was so relieved to find Kay's mother, Marjorie.  I will always remember Barbara carrying on that Mrs. Stevenson was as worried about her daughter as Barbara was worried about me.  This comforted Barbara enormously, even as it bewildered me.  Why would anyone worry about me?

Over the years, Kay has shown me what faithfulness means in her commitment to her mother.  Worry is what we do, and love is who we are.  Kay and her mother have taught me that over and over.

My father, Raimon Beard, was a close friend of Marjorie's when they were in high school in Longmont CO.  He was valedictorian of his class, the year ahead of Marjorie's.  I don't know whether they stayed in touch when he started his career and raised a family in Connecticut.  But when he passed away in 2003, we found the he and Marjorie had been corresponding regularly, so my sister and I made a point to meet her and learn more about the times they shared back in the 1920's and 1930's.  It was wonderful to have that link, and to understand better what our father's early years were like.  My husband Pat and I were able to visit Marjorie several times, and I'm so glad we did so before she passed away.  Our sincere condolences to her family.

On Sept.1, 1946, Marge and Ken hosted the reception for my oldest brother Edwin P. Banks and Virginia Forbess Banks, her older sister, following their wedding. I attended Ken's memorial service a few years ago.  As Phi Beta Kappa members, Marge and Kay, her daughter,  attended several meetings that I, also a member, had attended. I  knew their son, John, who came for hair cuts at the Emily Griffith Opportunity School where I taught in the academic department. They have all been considered a part of my loving extended family.

A very long time ago, 1945 to be precise, I first entered Mrs. Stevenson's American History class at North High School in Denver. From that first meeting of superb teacher and willing student there developed a wonderful, loving friendship that never ended. Margie and Ken over the years welcomed me into their home, and my husband and I welcomed them into ours, even after we moved to Washington State. 

There never was a better teacher nor a dearer friend and mentor. I will miss her, profoundly.
