Born in Denver, Colorado on January 11, 1923, Noreen Capps Hanson’s larger-than-life heart played its last beat on Wednesday, May 5, 2021, passing away peacefully surrounded by loving family. Noreen grew up in Pueblo, a great town for a plucky, spirited girl. At nineteen she married the love of her life, Jim Hanson, and they spent almost 71 years together. They raised a family of 3 beautiful daughters in Denver; it was a life of fun, travel, adventure and love.
Noreen was a woman of wit and wisdom, full of life and unforgettable personality. She enjoyed people; had a smile for everyone she met; and told funny stories that made folks laugh out loud! Noreen was the Queen of Rummikub and all things games, and she LOVED bowling and golf. When she played pool or ping pong with her kids or grandkids, they held onto their hats for her skills would make their heads spin!
Noreen was a highly regarded artist; her pieces hang prominently in homes across the United States. In addition, she was a well-loved art instructor and taught for over 40 years. Her students mattered to her; she made a real difference in their lives. Many stayed with Noreen’s classes for 20 years, saying she helped them produce works of true art that were admired by family and friends. One man told her, “You have transformed my wife! She never had any self-confidence until she took classes with you! Thank you so much!”
Service played a big part in Noreen’s life. She was a leader in scouting and church youth groups and served as president of more than one PTA, a big job! Her favorite volunteer service was on the amputee ward at Fitzsimmons Military Hospital during the Vietnam War. With her quirky humor and fun ways, she brought zest and laughter into the lives of “her boys” as they dealt with serious hardship. When she discovered that no one had time to wash their hair, she went to her supervisor with a plan. Noreen’s request went all the way to Washington and was finally approved. There were smiles of anticipation when the boys saw Noreen coming with her bowl of water and a big towel. She massaged their scalp and made their hair shine – it was WONDERFUL for them! Many stayed in touch with “mom” for years after their discharge.
Noreen was an avid sports fan, cheering on her Broncos, Nuggets, Rockies and Avalanche. She knew the names of all the players; she knew stats, trades, wins and losses, and loved talking sports with her sons-in-law. Noreen was supportive and proud of her grandchildren and great grandchildren in their various sports, music, dance and art activities. Most of her grandchildren hold advanced college degrees.
Noreen’s husband preceded her in death. Survivors include 3 daughters, Karen (Finnoff) (Dick Madsen); Mitch (Buzz Cleveland); and Sherry (Jones) (Dave Crist); 9 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren and
many, many dear friends. To express your remembrance of Noreen, please donate to the Denver Dumb Friends League or a charity of your choice. The family wishes to express deep gratitude to all who have assisted Noreen through these last years; to all who watched over her in her last hours; to all who have given sympathy, love and support to us in her passing.
Noreen, dearest mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend, you will ever be in our hearts. Memories of our times together will cheer us when we are blue; will encourage us when things are tough; and will give us hope for the future. Oh how we miss you! Oh how we love you!
