Richard was born on the north side of Chicago to Michael and Elenore Mathis on December 10th 1931. He was the 2nd oldest of 5 siblings Mickey (deceased), Mary (deceased), Patricia (deceased) and Phillip (deceased). At a tender age he started working at a newspaper stand with his older brother Mickey and his father. He joined the Navy during the Korean War and was a crew member on the Mandan. After service in the Navy, while working at a local Kroger store he met Flodina. After a brief courtship they were married in November of 1953 and spent 64 years together. Richard continued working as a tradesman into his 80’s.
In his later years Richard continued to indulge in hobbies such as writing poetry, photography and woodworking. He loved to share his end results with others. Richard loved to share stories of his life with anyone that would listen.
If asked what his greatest gift was he would reply it was his family and especially spending time with his grandchildren although it was never enough time for him.
Richard was preceded in death by his wife Flodina. He is survived by his children Richard Jr., Steve and his wife Mary, Vicki and her husband Matt, grandchildren Jeffrey, Alyssa and Jake. Great grandchildren Arlo and Eliana.
A graveside service for Richard will be held Thursday, July 20, 2023 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Olinger Chapel Hill Mortuary & Cemetery, 6601 South Colorado Blvd, Centennial, CO 80121.
