

She was born December 11, 1932 in Newton, Kansas, the daughter of Luther and Gladys McJilton. Shirley graduated from Newton High School in 1950 and attended Kansas State University and Wichita University. On May 31, 1952, she married Sidney Gates in Newton. He survives.
Other survivors include: son, Brian Gates and his wife Barbara of Arlington, TX, daughter, Carol Bauman and husband Bill of Centennial, CO, four grandchildren, Patrick and Russell Gates of Arlington, TX, and Leigh Torres and husband Steve of Castle Rock, CO, and Jackie Jackson and husband Luke of Highlands Ranch, CO, and five great-grandchildren. Also surviving are sisters, Barbara Fabic of Gaithersburg, MD, and Darla Neal of Hutchinson, KS, and fourteen nieces and nephews.
After raising her children, Shirley was the office manager of Dill and Dill, Attorneys at Law. She was an avid tennis and duplicate bridge player, a volunteer in the schools and a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother.
