She was born in Red Wing, Colorado, to Margarita and Federico Salazar on July 5, 1920. Susie was one of nine children; her siblings included Delfina, Josephina, Dionedes, Fernanado, Mary Lucy, Susie, Abe, Esmiria, and Jose.
In high school, Susie greatly enjoyed playing softball; as she grew, Susie’s interests shifted to creating—she spent a great deal of time sewing and embroidering, and had a special passion for crocheting. She loved playing with her unique dolls, she would dress them up and place them around the house as though they were everyday members of the family. You could also find Susie in the kitchen baking something delicious, tempting smells wafting from the kitchen.
She lived all over the state of Colorado including Fort Collins, Pueblo, Denver, Arvada, and Littleton. Susie also worked various jobs—as a house cleaner for the Hilton Hotel in downtown Denver; and she helped in hospitals where she did such outstanding work, she was especially recognized by her supervisor and given a raise when no one else received the same accolade. But through her hard work, Susie’s most important job was raising her family.
She was married first to Alfonso Chavez, and later to Abram Sandoval. Susie was blessed with seven children: Gilbert, Madaline, James, Andy, Toby, Isabela, and Phillip; who brought her more joy with their children, for a total of 17 grandchildren. Family gatherings were always so special to Susie, and not just on holidays. She enjoyed the daily get-togethers and Sunday dinners just as much; Susie would always be sure to pray before each meal.
Susie’s family grew—28 great-grandchildren and 9 great-great-grandchildren; she was a giving woman who loved her family more than anything. You could always count on her to have an open door and to share one of her stories, she had a great sense of humor and some unusual attributes. You always knew you were welcome to stay as long as you like.
Susie was preceded in death by Abram Sandoval (spouse); Madaline Urban, James Chavez, Isabela Chavez, Phillip Chavez (children); Thomas Montano and Jonathon Montano (grandchildren).
She is survived by Gilbert Chavez - Linda Hawkins (spouse) of Aurora, CO; Andy Chavez of Littleton, CO; Toby Chavez - Eleanor Medina (spouse) of Littleton, CO; 15 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren, 9 great-great-grandchildren; and 1 sibling, Delfina Lopez.
We would like to include a special thank you to all of the staff at Swedish Medical Center and at Lutheran Hospice Center who were so kind and gentle with Susie.
