Sylvia Jean Dykstra, was born on November 24, 1938 to parents Ralph and Tillie Dykstra, in Iowa. She was the third born of five children, Joyce, Charlotte, Sylvia, Norene, and Henry. In 1957, Sylvia met and fell in love with Peter Wielenga in Orange City, Iowa. They married later that year on November 21st. While Peter was attending Iowa State University in Ames, Sylvia and Peter welcomed their first daughter Barbara (Bradac). They then moved to Des Moines, Iowa and celebrated the birth of their son Douglas, and youngest daughter Debra (Martin). The family moved to Colorado Springs, Colorado in 1969, and eventually settled in the Denver area. Sylvia and Peter raised their family immersed in the Christian faith, and were contributing members of their church congregations. The family enjoyed many vacations all around Colorado, often spending weeks together in the mountains camping and fishing.
Sylvia had a great love for the finest things in life, such as her love for music. She memorized many of her favorite hymns to play on her piano for her family and friends, and held on to her memory and ability to dance along the keys well into her 80s. Sylvia, also an avid gardener, loved to take pictures and walk with friends to admire her beautiful flower gardens. She definitely had a sweet tooth, and was always looking for a little something to spoil her guests with during their visits, including her epic Lemon Love Notes, Banana Bread, and delicious desserts. She also expressed her creativity as a dedicated artist, creating many beautiful watercolor paintings to decorate her home.
Sylvia was preceded in death by her parents Ralph and Tillie Dykstra of Archer, IA, her husband, Peter Wielenga, her sister Charlotte Schmidt, and her son, Douglas Wielenga. She is survived by her daughter Barbara (Joseph Bradac) of Denver, CO, Debra (Kirk Martin) of Littleton, CO, her daughter in law Lorin Wielenga of Raleigh, NC, and her grandchildren, Deanna, Stephanie, Brian, Kellie, Cody, Jacob, Abigail, and Katelyn, her great-grandchildren, Charlotte, Olivia, and Oliver, her sisters, Joyce and husband Henry, Norene and husband Bud, and brother Henry and his wife Carolyn, and many extended family members.
We would like to thank our family and friends for their outpouring of love and support, thoughtfulness and prayers during this time.
There will be a reception for family and friends following the memorial service and burial at Olinger Chapel Hill, 6601 South Colorado Blvd. Centennial, CO 80121.
