Born in New York City on October 23, 1944, to author and New York World editor William Laas and his wife, Birdie Laas, Barbara attended the University of Michigan School of Education, where she graduated in 1966. She began her career teaching elementary school special education before transitioning to the advertising industry after returning to New York.
In Roslyn, New York, Barbara raised four children with her first husband, Michael Drazen, instilling in them her love for music, learning, and an active lifestyle. In 2004, she married Paul Schneider, with whom she shared a beautiful and adventurous partnership. Together, they found joy in playing doubles, both in tennis and pickleball, forming lasting friendships on and off the court. They moved from Long Island to Old Saybrook, Connecticut, in 2017, where they spent their remaining years together and quickly became an integral part of the community.
Barbara was a woman of remarkable strength, vibrancy, and warmth. She had an infectious energy that made her the heart of any gathering, always ready with a kind word, thoughtful advice, or, when the moment called for it, an impromptu dance party. She was a wonderful cook who made a mean Chicken Paprikash or Beef Stroganoff. Her generosity of spirit made her a beloved member of her community, where she was known for her unwavering support and enthusiasm for life.
Athletics and the arts were central to Barbara's life. She was an accomplished tennis and pickleball player who thrived on both competition and camaraderie. Music was another lifelong passion - she excelled at the violin as a child, later sang in local choirs, and was a gifted pianist who filled her home with music.
Barbara is survived by her devoted husband, Paul Schneider; her cherished children, Julie, Jacob, Dylan, and Emily Drazen; and her adored grandchildren, Leor and Roan Taragano, and Liam and Mischa Keene.
A Celebration of Life will be held on May 24, 2025, at 10:00 AM in the Gazebo area at Banbury Crossing, Old Saybrook, followed by a Parkinson’s fundraiser at the Old Saybrook Racquet Club, where Barbara will be honored. Parkinson’s awareness was a cause close to her heart, as she dedicated herself to organizing efforts in support of her husband, Paul, and others affected by the illness.
Barbara's kindness, passion, and boundless spirit left an indelible mark on those who knew her. May her memory continue to inspire and bring comfort to all whose lives she touched.
