David J. Surette, 81, longtime resident of Essex, passed away peacefully on January 17, 2025, at St. Francis Hospital in Hartford. Born in Stoneham, Massachusetts on April 9,1943, David was the beloved son of the late John and Eleanor (O’Brien) Surette. David was a generous, kind hearted soul who had an unmatched zest for life. He was gregarious and warm whenever meeting someone new and always had a knack for making anyone feel welcome with his big personality and even bigger heart. David loved the multitude of close friends he and Judy made over the years, and he would always found quality time to share with them. David found true happiness staying active and engaged in his favorite activities. He was an avid reader and even started a book club in Centerbrook. He loved to ride his motorcycle, cheer on the Red Sox and Celtics, or enjoy a fun day on the golf course with his good friends. For several years, he coached Essex Little League and helped with several community events. David relished getting lost in the music of some of his favorite musicians, including the Beatles, Annie Lennox, Lucinda Williams, Dylan, and Springsteen. Light on his feet with a joyous rhythm, he was known by all to be a fabulous dancer! David cherished every person that blessed his life. One of his greatest achievements was being able to make so many meaningful memories with so many wonderful friends. A true gentleman, David made a lasting impact on anyone fortunate enough to have met him. He will always be forever loved and deeply missed. David is survived by his loving wife of over 60 years, Judith (Knight) Surette; his three children, Lynn J. Surette, William J. Surette, and Jeremy Surette; his brother-in-law, James Jacob; his three nieces, Kristen, Lisa, and Jill; and many cherished family and dear friends too numerous to mention. In addition to his parents, David was predeceased by his daughter, Robin Surette; his sister, Diane Jacob; his brother, Peter B. Surette; and his nephew, Jack Jacob.
A Celebration of David’s Life will be held at later date in the spring. In lieu of flowers, donations in David’s honor may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Way, Memphis, TN 38105.
