Born on April 30, 1948, in Hartford, Connecticut, to the late Harriet and Donald Sangster of Essex, Donna was a dedicated educator, leader, and cherished member of her community.
Donna's early years were marked by her involvement with the Essex Ancient Tiers, where she served as a leader in the color guard group, performing alongside her sister Deb. She went on to earn a bachelor's degree from Eastern Connecticut State University and pursued a fulfilling career in education, teaching in Old Lyme. She found purpose in spending her day with the children, and joy in planning special events for her students.
After teaching, Donna transitioned to roles in restaurant management, working at Lum's in Old Saybrook and the Ivoryton Pub. She also contributed her talents to Diving Services, serving as an office manager and valued team member with Bob and her brother Mark. She continued her managerial roles where she was always a well-respected co-worker, she ultimately started her own small crafting business called “Christmas in July” to combine her passion for knitting with her love for Christmas. She created teddy bears with custom knit sweaters to order. The time spent with her community of crafters brought her years of pride and fulfillment with a refreshing change of pace and cherished friendships.
Donna will always be remembered as a kind, independent, strong-willed, thoughtful, and caring woman who had an infectious enthusiasm when talking about any of her passions. Her family was always at the forefront of her mind, along with her love of reading, Christmas, and knitting, which all brought her happiness. She was known for her thoughtful gifts, always planning the most thoughtful ways to let people know her love for them. Her family will always cherish her handmade gifts and remember joyfully the memories we have of her.
Donna is survived by her sister, Debra Marquis (Robert) of Old Saybrook, Ct. and brother, Mark Sangster of Niantic, Ct. She also leaves behind two nieces, Nicole Buzzelli (Joseph), Jaclyn Sangster and two nephews: Zachary Marquis, and Matthew Sangster (Emily) as well as a host of other family members, loving aunt, cousins and friends, by whom she will be sadly missed.
There will be a private family burial to honor Donna’s life.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made in Donna’s memory to UR Community Cares (urcommunitycares.org).
