Joan F. Hurworth

Born to Nelson and Jean Fry, Joan grew up in Bronxville, New York, where she enjoyed a happy childhood. She attended The Masters School before continuing her education at Pine Manor College and Briarcliff College. Following college, Joan lived and worked in New York City for 17 years, during which she developed a love of travel and formed many lifelong friendships.

Through work, Joan met Michael Hurworth and they were married at the Unitarian Church of All Souls in 1981. Together they welcomed their beloved daughter, Harriet, before settling in Darien, Connecticut, where they built their family home.

While living in Darien, Joan worked alongside her husband at Exchange Enterprises, the family's barter company, until her retirement in 1999. Following retirement, Joan and Michael moved to Ivoryton, Connecticut, where she enjoyed a slower pace of life surrounded by nature and dear friends.

Joan found great joy in tending her beautiful gardens, caring for her beloved dogs, and singing with her cherished Valley Shore Acappella chorus. She treasured the friendships she made throughout her life and especially delighted in spending time with her grandson, Liam, whom she adored. Joan never missed an opportunity to brag about Liam's accomplishments and took immense pride in watching him grow.

Above all, Joan will be remembered as a loving daughter, devoted wife, caring mother, and extraordinarily proud grandmother. Her warmth, humor, and generous heart touched everyone fortunate enough to know her.

Joan is survived by her daughter, Harriet; her son-in-law, Joshua; her beloved grandson, Liam; her faithful dog, Scruffy; her granddog, Louis; her extended family; and the many friends who brought her so much joy throughout her life.

Her memory will live on in the gardens she nurtured, the songs she sang, the friendships she cherished, and the love she so freely gave to her family. She leaves behind a lifetime of beautiful memories and will forever remain in the hearts of those who loved her.
