Lorese Hucks McQuinn

Lorese was the daughter of Dock William and Leola Shelley Hucks of Aynor, South Carolina. She was predeceased by her beloved husband of 58 years, William Patrick McQuinn.

She was the devoted mother of four loving daughters: Kathryn McQuinn Ryan (John), Norah Eileen McQuinn Conkling (Samuel), Linda Bridget McQuinn Niccolai, and Jennifer McQuinn Chard (Scott). Her ten grandchildren brought her immense joy: Megan Elizabeth Ryan, Daniel Patrick Ryan, Michael Joseph Ryan (Marie), William McQuinn Conkling, Conor McQuinn Conkling, Bridget Elizabeth Conkling, Patrick Matthew Niccolai, Steven James Niccolai, Samuel William Chard, and Benjamin McQuinn Chard.

Lorese was also deeply loved by her siblings, William Duke Hucks (Angie) and Rebecca Ann Hucks. She was predeceased by her sister, Wilma Lee Hucks Tirrell. Throughout her life, Lorese cherished the close bonds she shared with her siblings and was devoted to their families as well.

Lorese was raised on her family's farm in Aynor, South Carolina, established in 1772. She often spoke fondly of her childhood there and treasured those memories throughout her life. She returned often to visit her parents, siblings, and the many members of her extended family who continued to call the area home.

She graduated from Aynor High School and Winthrop College before moving to Arlington, Virginia where she met and married Bill. They later moved to Hamden, Connecticut and then to Colorado before finally settling in Old Greenwich, Connecticut. Lorese and Bill raised their family there and created a welcoming home where family and friends gathered and countless memories were made, including at their annual Kentucky Derby Party. Over the years, Lorese built lifelong friendships throughout the community and treasured the many meaningful connections she made in Old Greenwich.

Lorese worked as a public school teacher, dedicating most of her career in the field of special education. She was passionate about helping children learn and grow and took great pride in the relationships she built with her students. Some of them continued to stay in touch for years.

Lorese enjoyed many hobbies and activities that kept her engaged with her community and surrounded by the people she loved. One of her greatest joys was being an active member of the Old Greenwich Garden Club for 50 years, including proudly serving as President. Each year, she enthusiastically participated in the club’s flower show, showing blooms from her own garden and earning many awards for her beautiful arrangements. She could often be found tending to her garden, a place she cherished and where she found great joy and peace.

Lorese loved riding her bicycle and was a familiar sight pedaling around Tod’s Point and Binney Park. Watching the night sky for meteor showers and satellites was a favorite past-time. Lorese cherished her summers at Rocky Point Club, where she enjoyed watching her children swim, dive, and sail in addition to spending time in the company of good friends.

Above all, Lorese treasured the time she spent with her grandchildren and embraced every opportunity to be part of their lives. She did this in countless ways, including teaching them gardening tips, attending school and sporting events, sending holiday and birthday cards in the mail, sewing stuffed animals and costumes for them, taking care of them and offering a ride whenever needed, and creating everyday moments that became lifelong memories.

Her sweetness, generosity, and unwavering love will remain with all who knew her.

A private burial took place at Calvary Cemetery in Waterbury, Connecticut. The family plans to gather for a memorial service in Greenwich, Connecticut at a later date to celebrate her life.
