Moira Boucher

Moira (Mori) Boucher aged 85 passed away on Monday, August 10, 2026, following a brief illness. She died peacefully holding her daughter Correne’s hand. Moira was predeceased by her beloved husband Don in 2025.

Moira was born in Glasgow, Scotland, October 26, 1940 to Joseph and Mary Hughes, the youngest of four children and only daughter. Although her childhood and youth were shaped by the trauma and terrible conditions of WW2 and the recovery years, there were nevertheless numerous funny stories of life with the Hughes clan and friends, who somehow usually managed to find the bright side of things. Moira, always a creative spirit, pursued her love of fashion at design school. There she delighted friends and family by creating glorious ensembles for herself and her friends so they could go out dancing every weekend - never repeating an outfit and always recycling all materials possible. Her mother’s sewing machine got quite the work out! Moira was a prolific seamstress and knitter all her life, making many of her daughter Correne’s clothes as well as household items, and despite her declining vision, knitted until the last weeks of her life. Moira also loved to garden and arrange flowers.

Moira was bright, adventurous, and loved to travel, so it surprised no one when, in the early 1960’s she traveled to Stamford, CT, where she had some Scottish friends. She had told her parents it would be a “wee adventure” and she would return home soon. It was here that she met the love of her life, Don Boucher. She quickly fell for the tall, dark, and handsome Yank with the crooked smile, and her parents knew that she was never coming home. Don and Moira married in 1966. Theirs was a true love story; they were the gold standard for a love- and laughter-filled marriage that lasted 58 years. They were each other’s best friends. In 1967 they welcomed the arrival of Correne, their only child. Moira was a doting and loving mother whose Scottish no-nonsense approach still allowed her to spoil Correne with love and affection beyond measure. She was also the most wonderful grandmother (and unlimited ice cream provider) to her treasured granddaughter Katie Mae.

Don and Moira spent many weekends in Vermont visiting Don’s family, and eventually moved there permanently in 1974. Moira, outgoing and “never met a stranger,” soon made a legion of close friends who became like family. She never forgot a face or a name and could chat up anyone and have their life’s story in minutes. She put her fashion and sewing skills to work at Orvis doing alterations and custom work, and then transitioned to their fly-fishing line tying. As Correne grew older, Moira again used her passion for fashion and engaging with people to be very successful in retail, culminating in being one of TSE Cashmere’s top sellers and longest working employed in the company. She loved working with her great teammates and wonderful customers until she finally retired at age 73 (at Don’s insistence!)

Moira - always with help from her doting Don - was the consummate hostess. Their parties and dinners were legendary for great food, wine, décor, personal touches - and endless laughter. Moira loved making all feel welcome in her home, and there was always room for one more at the table. Hers was truly a life filled with the joy of many dear friends, and she maintained correspondence with friends around the world.

Don and Mori spent 17 years as “snowbirds,” spending the cold New England winters in Anna Maria Island and Bradenton, Florida, where they of course made more good friends. Moira taught knitting classes on the beach! In 2017, they moved to Ivoryton, CT to be closer to Correne and Katie. They loved spending time with their girls, and unsurprisingly, they also spent their time entertaining, creating, and making memories with their new friends in CT. Moira also became devoted to her regular workouts at the local YMCA.

Moira is survived by her daughter Correne Boucher and granddaughter Katherine (Katie) Boucher, both of Higganum, CT. She is also survived by her brother Joseph Hughes of Cambridge, Ontario and his children, several nieces and nephews in Canada, and cousins in Scotland and England. Here in the United States, she is survived by her brother-in-law Peter Boucher and his wife Debra, their children Jonathan, Marc, and Melissa and their spouses and children. She is also survived by her best friend of over 50 years, Carol Pizzo, her husband Vinny, and family, and many, many other friends too numerous to mention.

Moira wanted the end of her life to be a celebration of all that she loved. To remember her, please have a “wee cup of tea,” make a new friend or just be kind to a stranger, find joy in the small things, and live life to the fullest.
