Tom was born to Laren and Juliette (Belanger) Smart in Methuen, MA. He married the love of his life, Kathleen McLaughlin, and they raised their family in New Hampshire and Massachusetts before relocating to Connecticut.
Tom had a zest for life and could light up a room with his outgoing personality. He had a love of cooking, music, fishing, politics, New England sports, and was always quick with a joke. His infectious nature brought him success in business and beyond, resulting in an expansive network of colleagues and long-lasting friendships. Tom greatly enjoyed his work with Ormes Transportation, Wakefield Distribution, First Choice, and Sterling Corporation and his involvement with the Boston Chapter of the International Facility Management Association (IFMA).
All of this paled in comparison to his love for his family. He loved being, among other roles, a dad, husband, and most recently a Pepérè.
Tom’s life unexpectedly pivoted toward fighting chronic illness starting in early 2016. He fought a courageous battle with Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), giving it his all until the very end. In lieu of flowers, blood and platelet donations can be made through the Kraft Family Blood Donor Center at Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, MA. Alternatively, monetary donations can be given in Tom’s name to the Jimmy Fund at www.jimmyfund.org.
In addition to his wife, Kathy, Tom leaves behind his children, Thomas Smart Jr. and his wife Courtney, Kathleen Smart, and Meghan O’Briskie and her husband Sean; his granddaughter Annie; his father Laren; his siblings Paul Smart, Patricia LaGraves, and Donna Arrajj; his godmother Cecile Belanger; his aunt Eleanor Byrne; as well as his many extended family members and cherished friends.
Tom is predeceased by his mother, Juliette, and his in-laws Francis and Ann McLaughlin.
Special thanks to the countless doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals and staff for their care throughout the last decade.
A funeral mass will take place on Thursday June 12, 2025, at 2:00PM at Saint Agnes Catholic Church, 22 Haigh Ave, Niantic, CT 06357.
