William “Bill” Huther passed away peacefully on June 11, 2026, at the age of 93. Bill’s deep love for his country, family, and friends shaped every chapter of his life. His humor, generosity, and enthusiasm for living left a lasting impression on all who knew him. Born in Bloomfield, New Jersey, and raised in Nutley, Bill came of age during a period marked by significant challenges. The son of German immigrant parents, born between two World Wars, he developed a resilience, loyalty, and strength of character that remained hallmarks of his life. As a teenager, he joined the National Guard and later earned a commission in the United States Marine Corps, achieving the rank of Captain. A devoted patriot, Bill embodied the spirit of Semper Fidelis in all he did. He often encouraged others with the phrase, “No mariner distinguishes himself on a calm sea.” Whether facing the challenges of military service, raising a family, building businesses, or navigating life's uncertainties, he met each with courage, grit, and unwavering determination.
Bill attended the University of Maryland, where he played football for the “Terps” and earned a degree in business. Just days before graduation, he fortuitously met the love of his life, Toni (Allison Fry Huther). Their 63-year marriage was built on partnership, adventure, mutual respect, and enduring devotion. The newlyweds began their life together in South Carolina during Bill’s active-duty service in the Marine Corps. Following his military career, Bill entered the business world, beginning at IBM and eventually rising to become Vice Chairman of an international technology company. His entrepreneurial spirit and professional pursuits took him to many places and adventures throughout the years, ultimately leading him and Toni to Essex, Connecticut. Along the way, they made homes in Stamford and Darien, Connecticut; Fort Myers, Florida; Newbury, New Hampshire; Highlands and Winston-Salem, North Carolina; Atlanta, Georgia; the Washington, D.C., area; and St. Albans, England.
Bill leaves behind a cherished family legacy. He is survived by his daughter, Debra (Huther) Cooper; son-in-law Bill Cooper; grandsons Alex and Ryan Cooper; daughter Allison (Huther) Fresher; son-in-law Brian Fresher; grandson Samuel Fresher; granddaughter Molly (Fresher) Hilzinger; Molly’s husband, Jon Hilzinger; and their daughters, Isabelle and Madelyn Hilzinger. Bill is also survived by numerous in-laws, nieces, and nephews, whose lives were enriched by his love, generosity, and enduring affection. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Toni, and his daughter, Susan Elizabeth Huther, and his siblings, Margaret, Helen and Arno.
A memorial service will be held in October at St. John's Episcopal Church, where family and friends will gather to celebrate Bill’s remarkable life and the enduring impact he made on those who loved him.
