

David Samuel Rothenberg, age 87, of Stony Brook, New York, passed away on Saturday, February 1, 2025. Born in New York City in 1937 to George and Sonia Rothenberg, David lived a full and varied life marked by both professional achievement and personal passion.
David's career as a civil engineer began with his studies in engineering, leading to a distinguished role with the New York Department of Public Works, which eventually became the Department of Transportation. He played an instrumental role in the creation of INFORM, the country’s first smart road system, on Long Island during the 1980s and 1990s. In addition to his engineering career, David served in the National Guard and was an active member of the Public Employees Federation. He also contributed to the Long Island State Employees Credit Union.
Outside of his professional life, David was a man of many talents and interests. He briefly pitched in the minor leagues while in high school, and later enjoyed a passion for racing cars. An avid sailor, David volunteered for the Coast Guard Auxiliary, taught boating courses, and founded the American Sailing School in the 1970s. He raced sailboats and even organized races in Smithtown Bay in the 1980s. Additionally, he found joy in bowling, winning several trophies in his leisure time.
Most importantly, David shared his life with his beloved wife, Arlene, whom he married in 1963. Together, they had two sons, Howard and Robert. David is survived by his son Robert, daughter-in-law Pegine, and granddaughter Rowan.
David's contributions to his community, his family, and his many hobbies will be remembered fondly. He was a dedicated father, husband, and friend, and will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
A graveside service for David will be held on Friday, February 7, 2025, from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Beth Israel Cemetery, 1098 Woodbridge Center Dr, Woodbridge Township, NJ 07095.
