On Saturday morning January 16, 2021, Tommy Jeff Strain passed away very peacefully at the age of 78 at home with his family.
Tommy was born April 29, 1942 in Baton Rouge to Robert, a Rancher, and Hazel (Shanks) Strain. He was their only child. He was a 1960 graduate of Central High School. He studied at Southeastern Louisiana University where he was a member of the Baptist Student Union. It was there that he met the love of his life, Barbara “Sue” Bernard. They married June 2, 1968. They raised two beautiful daughters, Rebecca Caroline and Jennifer Rene’. Tommy had the most amazing love for his wife, daughters and grandchildren.
Tommy worked in the accounting department at Louisiana National Bank for several years. He then took a job as a computer operator with NASA. Being the only child of a rancher, Lazy S Ranch, he left his job at NASA to help run the ranch, which is still there to this day. He also owned residential and commercial property in Central. Tommy never met a stranger. When you met him, he ALWAYS greeted you with a huge smile, and he considered you as part of his family. He was always so willing to help people any way he could. He was thoughtful, giving, and absolutely the most kindest man you could ever meet. He had a vast quest for knowledge, and was an avid researcher, even in the end. He was passionate about his country, Louisiana, and our land. He loved trees and animals, especially cattle. He was a member of the Arbor Day Foundation, Greenwell Springs Youth Riders, the National Rifle Association and a lifelong member of First Baptist Church of Central.
Tommy is proceeded in death by his parents, Robert and Hazel Strain. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Barbara “Sue” Strain, his daughters Rebecca, her husband Gregory Austin and Jennifer Bankston, his three granddaughters, Faith, Alyssa and Riley and five grandsons, Hunter, his wife Anna Mae, Cole, Seth, Grant and Jake.
Pallbearers are Greg Austin, Cole Austin, Seth Austin, Faith Bauer, Stanley “Stick” Davis and Benjamin Gautreaux. Honorary Pallbearers are Richie Langlois and Gary “Uncle Dave” Davis.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday January 21, 2021 at Zoar Baptist Church, 11848 Hooper Rd., Baton Rouge, LA 70818. Visitation will be from 12:00pm-2:00Pm with funeral service conducted by Bro Glen Miers at 2:00pm. Interment following at Magnolia United Methodist Church, 16024 Greenwell Springs Rd, Greenwell Springs, LA 70739.
