Doug graduated from Benson Polytechnic High School in Portland in 1956 as an automotive major. He then served five years in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Yorktown. After his honorable discharge, he attended Lane Community College in Eugene Oregon earning a degree in Airframe and Powerplant. With this degree, he was hired by United Airlines as an aircraft mechanic where he worked for 32 years until his retirement in 1996. In 1960, he married Janet Denny. They had two children, Darcy (Mark) Wenger of Manson, Washington and Russell (Tammi) Spencer of Ventura, California. They later divorced.
Doug was a longtime member of the Midnight Riders Street Rod Association that sponsored the Dam Rod Run car show in Mossyrock. It was there in 1991 that Doug met Karen Taylor and they married four years later. Together they enjoyed traveling to numerous car shows in the U.S. and Canada. In addition to hot rods, he was a fan of NASCAR and the Seahawks.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings, Raymond and Jacqueline. He is survived by his wife Karen, children Darcy (Mark) Wenger, Russell (Tammi) Spencer and stepdaughter Melanie Clevinger, grandchildren Kylie Spencer, Kasie (Alex) Hernandez and Mark (Elly) Spencer.
A Funeral Service will be held at Brown Mortuary, 812 Westlake Ave., on Friday, May 9th at 1pm, followed by a Graveside Service at Morton City Cemetery. A reception will immediately follow at the Morton Senior Center. Memorials may be made to Visiting Nurses Foundation or Grace Church in Chehalis.
