Paulina Marie (Deiner-Smithson-Pittman) Van Horn, 96, passed away on Monday, August 6, 2018, at Sharon Care in Centralia. Paulina was born on October 19, 1921, in Grass Range, MT; one of two daughters born to Mr. Anton Deiner and Wave (Deaver) Deiner.
Paulina, her mother, and her sister, Edith, moved to Brook Park, MN, in December of 1925. She was baptized on April 4, 1926, at the Brook Park Methodist Community Church. Paulina graduated from high school in 1939; continuing her education at the Hinckley Teacher Training Department through 1940. Paulina married Albert Henry Van Horn on Jun. 9, 1943, in Brook Park, MN. They had three sons together.
Paulina worked many jobs throughout her life. She was a mother and housewife; taught for six years in rural schools; was a school cafeteria cook in several schools; and worked in retail for many years, employment at Montgomery Ward in St. Paul, MN, and Dahlberg Electronics in Golden Valley, MN. In February of 1970, Paulina started a career at the Post Office in Minneapolis, MN; working there until her retirement in 1985.
Paulina is preceded in death by her parents, Anton and Wave; husband, Albert Henry Van Horn; sister, Edith Mann; and a son, Robert Van Horn.
She is survived by her sons Albert Richard Van Horn, and Larry (Kathy) Van Horn; granddaughter, Neomi Van Horn and her husband Matt Weaver; and great-grandchildren, Sylvie and Gracie Weaver.
A memorial service will take place at 2 PM on Friday, September 14, at Sticklin Funeral Chapel, 1437 S Gold St, Centralia. A reception will follow the service in the Chapel’s Hospitality Room. According to Pauline’s wishes, she will be inurned in Minnesota at a later date.
In closing, Paulina wanted to leave us with this message; “I love all my family members very much. Thank you for the love, help, concern, and devotion which you have bestowed upon me. Each one of you is a very wonderful, unique individual and I thank God for the ways you have enriched my life. Blessings to each and every one of you!”
