William Paul Ponchene, 73, of Rochester, Washington, passed away Monday, August 15, 2022. He was born August 26, 1948 in Seldovia, Alaska. William lived in Seward, Alaska most of his childhood, with exception of a California residency for a few years.
He worked in Alaska on crabbing and fishing boats, with stories to tell that entertained many. William was deployed to Vietnam as a gunner in the United States Army, where he made the most of every opportunity possible. He settled in Rochester, Washington to care for his mother, while he worked at Lucky Eagle Casino and upon retirement, he started his “affair” with Nisqually Red Wind Casino, often saying he was “going to work” when he went there.
Every spring, he anxiously awaited the return of his beloved swallows and often picked up a baby and returned it to the nest. He had a quick wit and was beloved by his neighbors, whom he helped anytime they needed it.
William would take his son, Steven on long drives, just the two of them together, to enjoy the beauty around them.
He was preceded in death by his dad, Leroy Hollman; and mom, Irene Hollman.
William is survived by his uncle, Frank Saracoff and Steven Kunnuk, whom he was very proud of.
No services will be held.
Arrangements are under the care and direction of Sticklin Funeral Chapel.
