His life reflected a steady dedication to the people and places entrusted to his care.
Maurice was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 58 years, Dycie Perry Nichols. Together, they built a family whose love and connection remain among his most enduring legacies. He is also preceded by his parents, Troy B. Nichols and Mattie Era Hopkins Nichols; sister, Betty Faye Mitchell; brother, Clarence Nichols.
He leaves behind six children: Robin Ray (Earl), Marty Nichols, Judy Nichols, Shay Nichols, Jenny Hughey (Bryan), and Jill Fischer (Mike); nine grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren; sisters, Martha "Mop" Osbourne from Uniontown, AL and Carolyn Adams from Johnson City, TN; along with numerous family members and friends who will forever hold him in their hearts. Through them, his memory will live on in the stories shared, the values passed down, and the love that continues to bind the family together.
Those who knew Chief will remember a life marked by loyalty, perseverance, and a deep commitment to family and service. His years in uniform, his work at Marion Military Institute, and the love he gave to those closest to him all speak to the lasting difference he made.
