

Sergeant Major(SGM) James Wesley Belcher, age 90, died August 21, 2017 at William F. Green State Veteran’s Home in Bay Minette, Alabama. He was born in Oakman, AL on January 19, 1927. Services will be held 11:00 a.m. Thursday, August 24, 2017 at Rockco Funeral Home in Centreville, Al with visitation one hour prior. SGM Belcher is survived by his daughter, Carol J. Belcher, Alexander City, AL and his son, James W. (Butch) Belcher, Jr. (Ellen) of Orange Beach, AL; his grandchildren Travis, Aimee and Drew (Ty-Anne) Belcher; and a host of extended family and friends. The family wishes to thank caregivers and companions Candi McGee and nephew Tommy Martin. He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Billie Dupree Belcher; his parents, Tom and Ethel Belcher; sisters, Dot Belcher Martin and Bonettia Belcher Martin; and brothers, Paul and Howard Belcher. SGM Belcher served in the Navy during World War II and in the Army during the Korean and Vietnam Wars, retiring in 1968 with the rank of Sergeant Major. After his retirement from military service, he returned to Brent, AL where he continued to work and raise his children. SGM Belcher was a true patriot and his family is very proud of the service he provided to his country that allows the freedoms we all enjoy. Each day, he could be observed proudly raising the American flag at his home until age 90. SGM Belcher was a wonderful Dad, Paw Paw Dub, and a friend to many, all of whom will remember him for his storytelling, humor, laughter, love for life and his family and as a great American. Pallbearers will be grandsons, Travis and Drew Belcher; and friends, Terry Morton, Brent Lightsey, Steve Boyd and Dane McKinney.
