Linda T. (Champion) Hammitt, 79, of Woodstock AL passed away on Sept. 17, 2022 with her family by her side. She was born on January 16, 1943 to Dorothy Alice Elam Thompson and John "Jim" David Thompson. Linda was a member of First Baptist Church of Woodstock where she served faithfully for over 47 years. She graduated from Bibb County high school and earned a Nursing degree from the University of Alabama. She was one of the first 3 Nurse Practitioners in the State of Alabama. In the '70s, she was Head of Nursing at Bibb Medical Center. Following that, she served as Director of West Blocton Medical Clinic. Then she worked in home health across Bibb County, and finished her career in clinical research. She loved to cook for others, paint, cross stitch, read, decorate for all occasions, and send cards of encouragement to all. She was a loving Momma, Grandmuffer, Grammie, wife, sister, aunt and friend to all in the community. Her love for God was evident by her servant's heart and how she loved, nurtured and encouraged all those around her. She was preceded in death by her mother and father; her hubands, Robert H. Champion Sr. and Richard E. Hammitt; her daughter-in-law, Maria Speaks Champion; her son-in-law, Eddie Caraway; her sister, Jimmye Smitherman; and her brothers, Joe, Chris, and Jeffrey Thompson. She is survived by children, Robert H. Champion Jr. (Maria Shelby), Lori Caraway, and Jason Hammitt (Janie Kinard); grandchildren, Beth Champion (Michael O'Dell), Taylor Miller, Morgan Caraway, Robert Champion III (Amanda), Aubrey Champion, Jordan Caraway, Hunter Hammitt, and Casie Jones; great-grandchildren, Scarlet Elizabeth Champion, Donovan Cooper, Zayden & Bryce Miller, and Jeremiah & Jaidyn Jones; her sisters, Judy Jackson and Donna House; sisters-in-love, Wanda Thompson, Liz Thompson and Pearline Englebert; numerous nieces and nephew; and beloved pet, Pedro. Her life was an example of unconditional love that inspired others by her faith in God. “Ms. Hammitt”, as she was known, will be greatly missed. Pallbearers will be Robert and Aubrey Champion, Hunter Hammitt, Michael O’Dell, Kolton & Landon Kinard. A visitation for Linda will be held Monday, September 19, 2022 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at First Baptist Church of Woodstock. She will lie in-state on Tuesday, September 20, 2022 from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM with her funeral service to follow at 1:00 PM at First Baptist Church of Woodstock. Linda will be laid to rest in Elmwood Cemetery & Mausoleum, 600 Martin Luther King Jr Dr, Birmingham, AL 35211-2835.
