Steven Peter Dakis

Steven Peter Dakis' story is a powerful testament to a life fueled by passion, perseverance, and an unwavering love for those around him. Born on December 16, 1964, in the heart of Mobile County, Alabama, he was a boy whose spirit was shaped by the rhythm of hard work and the soulful pulse of music. When he left this earth on July 11, 2026, in the comfort of his home in Bibb County, AL, he left behind a legacy etched in devotion, resilience, and melody—a life deeply rooted in family, craftsmanship, and the music that moved his soul.

His parents, Peter Dakis and JoAnn McCool, preceded him, but their love and memory stayed fiercely alive in his heart, guiding him through every chapter of his journey. Steve carried their legacy with pride, a testament to the roots that grounded him.

A proud West Blocton Tiger, Class of 1983, Steve's dedication was evident in every aspect of his life. From working tirelessly as a steelworker in the 1990s, earning his SBCA certification in satellite telecommunications in the early 2000s, to becoming coal-mining certified through Bevill State in the early 2010s—his hands built more than just structures; they built strength, reliability, and trust. Whether taking on handyman jobs or crafting something lasting from raw materials, he understood the true value of hard work and the beauty of creating enduring things.

At his core, Steve was a musician with a heartbeat that never slowed. Drums were his first love, learned from his stepfather at just age 12, and for nearly five decades, he poured his soul into every beat. Whether in garage bands, cover bands, church bands or marching on the West Blocton high school drum-line, his sound was a vibrant force that resonated with everyone fortunate enough to hear it. His rhythms touched souls, drew tears, and ignited passions—his music was an extension of his very being. With every beat he played, he shared his gift, passing the love of percussion onto his son, ensuring that his spirit would forever carry on through the steadfast rhythm of his family.

Steve's passion wasn’t limited to music—his heart beat fiercely for Auburn, celebrated today with one of his favorite flowers, orange tiger lilies. His other favorite flowers being tulips, sunflowers, and roses. His spirit was as bold and unmistakable as the legendary band KISS(his favorite), whose energetic sound matched his fearless soul. His love extended beyond humans; he was a devoted pet parent to his dog Scrappy and cats Buddy and Bowser, offering them unwavering loyalty and love that mirrored his dedication to family and friends.

He is survived by his son Nicholas Chase Dakis (Franchestia Flennory), stepsister Jennifer Ann Mallah (Hannahan, SC), former wife Patricia Davis (Centreville, AL), aunts, uncles, nephews and many cousins spread across Alabama, South Carolina, and Athens, Greece. His family tree stretched wide, and he cherished every branch.

Steve lived a life marked by weathered hands and a passionate heart, built through relentless effort and played with loud, joyful noise. His legacy endures in the memories carved into the hearts of all who knew him—through the soulful music he created, the strength of his work, and the steadfast beat he passed on. His spirit will forever echo in the lives he touched, a reminder that love, hard work, and music are the enduring chords of a life well-lived.

A Celebration of Life will be held for Steve at Rockco Funeral Home in Centreville, AL on July 27, 2026 at 12pm.
