Allen was raised in Reggio, Louisiana, attended Sebastian Roy Elementary in Yscloskey, and graduated from St. Bernard High School. Shop class sparked a lifelong love of woodworking. He and his childhood friends spent much of their time boating, swimming, fishing, trawling, and constantly repairing boats and motors. His parents raised their children to be hardworking, independent, and honest.
He proudly served in the Air Force and was stationed in Chandler, Arizona. He and Carol were married in St. Bernard while he was home on leave. He was honorably discharged in November 1965, shortly after Hurricane Betsy and the birth of Michael. They returned to St. Bernard, where they raised their family.
Allen worked in the oil industry until retiring at the age of 55. He deeply appreciated the lifelong friendships he formed during those years. He retired early to pursue his true passions of woodworking and carpentry. He crafted many pieces of furniture for his home, the homes of his sons, and those of many friends and relatives. Almost every home he visited had at least one of his breadboards, if not an entire table.
He eventually built his final home, completing it just five years before having to rebuild after Hurricane Katrina. Allen was never going to leave his hometown.
Allen’s proudest achievement was raising sons who went on to have successful careers in medicine, even though this meant they lived far from their hometown. He and Carol considered the love and time they shared with their sons and their families to be the best days of their lives.
