It is with great sadness that the family of Congetta "Connie" Volpe Sierra announces her passing on Saturday, May 20, 2023, at the age of 106. She was born on Dec 09, 1916, in St. Bernard Parish. She was preceded in death by her husband of 43 years, Cedric Luke Sierra, her parents Salvadore & Anna Culotta Volpe, and her siblings Paul, Vitale "Vic," Salvador "Sam," Theresa "Sis" Corne, and Joseph. Loving mother of JoAnn Kelley Golla (Robert), Carol Newman (Jimmie), Sundra Cruthirds (Wayne), and Keith Sierra, Sr. (Suzanne). Grandmother of Christie Kelley, Michael Kelley (Janie), Letitia Newman Grayson (Larry), Leah Newman Vinsanau (Michael), David Newman (Bridget), Wayne Cruthirds, Sarah Cruthirds, Jessica Sierra, and Keith Sierra (Meghan), Jr. 13 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, also survive her.
She was a devout catholic who loved God and the Blessed Mother. She dedicated her life to serving her church and community and was an active member of the altar society, the Versailles Homemakers Assn, and the St Joseph Altar Society. She was inducted as the first and only female member of St Mark Catholic Church Marksmen group in Chalmette, LA. Connie received the order of St Louis IX medallion- for service and contribution to her parish.
She loved meeting people and making new friends. She loved good food and great company and was known for her quick wit. She hoped to teach the world to make homemade bread and loved sewing and traveling with the ladies in her groups. She was an active member of multiple card groups and enjoyed occasional trips to the casino for penny slots.
We were blessed to learn many valuable lessons & skills from this remarkable woman. She set an example for her family that will lead us all our lives. She was always there when we needed her, but most of all, she loved us and taught us that, above all else, family is the most important thing. We know she will be missed by family, extended family, and countless honorary nieces and nephews. Thank you to her dear friends for being in her life; she loved every one of you.
We wish to thank the fantastic Ochsner Northshore Hospital team and in-home caretakers Martina, Amanda, Shemeke, Lynette, Shiela, and Lauren at Ehabit for their exceptional final care.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a visitation to be held at OUR LADY OF PROMPT SUCCOR CATHOLIC CHURCH, 2320 Paris Rd., Chalmette, LA on Tuesday, May 30, 2023 from 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM. A Funeral Mass will begin at 12:00 PM. She will be laid to rest in St. Bernard Catholic Cemetery, St. Bernard, LA. In lieu of flowers, Connie would hope that you would perform an unexpected act of kindness.
