Gail Marcella Calato

Gail Ann Marcella Calato passed away on September 22, 2025 at the age of 74. She was the loving wife of Frank T. Calato for 52 years. She was the beloved mother of Michael Calato (Donna) and Stephen Calato (Jill). Sister of Barry Marcella (Robin) and Lisa Pescay (Shane). Proud Mimi of Hayden Calato, Hunter Calato, Ian Calato, Cruz Calato, Darius Tortorich (Paige), Lindsey Tortorich, Hunter Tortorich, and 4 great-grandchildren. Also survived by many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents Shirley LeBlanc Marcella and Frank Marcella.

Gail was a devoted educator, beginning her career as a bus driver and secretary. She furthered her career by earning a Bachelor of Arts in English Education from the University of New Orleans and a Master of Education in Educational Leadership from American College of Education. She proudly served the students at N.P. Trist Middle School as an English Language Arts teacher for 19 years. Upon her retirement, Gail continued to share her love of reading by fulfilling a dream of opening a local bookstore, Two Fish Books, to provide access to literature to the residents of St. Bernard Parish.

Gail was so much to so many and made a lasting impact on all who knew her. May her legacy continue to inspire those she touched for many years to come. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to Two Fish Books to continue Gail’s legacy and love for reading.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a memorial gathering to be held at ST. BERNARD MEMORIAL FUNERAL HOME, 701 W. Virtue St., Chalmette, LA on Friday, October 3, 2025, from 9:00AM – 11:00AM, followed by a memorial service in Gail’s memory beginning at 11:00AM.
