Gregorio “Poncho” Morales Sr. passed away on Monday, January 8, 2024 at the age of 94. Born on a picturesque ranch in Nuevo Leon, Mexico, on March 12, 1929, Poncho embraced a life deeply rooted in his love of the outdoors.
Gregorio is survived by his children Maria Thibodeaux, Efrain Morales (Jane), Gregorio Morales Jr., Angie Hemstreet, Tomasa Ard and Guadalupe Morales; his 15 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and 3 great-great-grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his loving wife of sixty years, Luciana Valdez; his parents Sixto and Tomasa Morales; his sons-in-law Paul Thibodeaux, John Hemstreet, and Ambrose Ard; and four brothers.
Gregorio was a devoted worker of T. Smiths and Sons, dedicating thirty years as a longshoreman. In addition, he had a love for thoroughbred horses and being outdoors in the countryside. The fresh air reminded him of his youth, growing up on a ranch. His final words were “I’m going home to take care of the cows.” May his spirit find eternal rest, surrounded by the peaceful meadows and the comforting presence of the cattle he loved so dearly.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a visitation to be held at ST. BERNARD MEMORIAL FUNERAL HOME, 701 W. Virtue St., Chalmette, LA on Friday, January 19, 2024 from 11:00 AM-1:00 PM. A funeral service will begin at 1:00 PM. Burial will follow in ST. BERNARD MEMORIAL GARDENS.
