Hassie Duran Howell, age 99, passed away peacefully on June 6, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family. He lived a long and meaningful life filled with hard work, devotion, and an unwavering love for those closest to him. In 2024, he lost his beloved wife and soulmate, Maria. They were married for 68 wonderful years, sharing a lifetime of memories, adventures, and unconditional love. She was truly the love of his life, and he never stopped missing her after her passing. Their marriage was a beautiful example of commitment, friendship, and enduring love.
Above all else, Hassie loved his family. His children were his greatest pride and joy, and he cherished every moment spent with them. Whether sharing stories, offering advice, or simply enjoying time together, his family always came first. His love extended to his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and all those fortunate enough to call him family. A hardworking and talented man, he enjoyed being a handyman and took great pride in maintaining and caring for his rental properties. Before his health declined, he could often be found fixing something, improving a property, or helping someone in need. He believed in hard work and was never afraid to get his hands dirty.
He also loved spending time outdoors, especially fishing. Some of his happiest moments were spent by the water with a fishing pole in hand. Sports were another passion throughout his life. He was an avid wrestling fan and loved watching baseball. As a lifelong fan of the New York Yankees, one of his favorite experiences was traveling to New York City to watch the Yankees play in person. During football season, he faithfully cheered for the New Orleans Saints and enjoyed following every game.
Traveling brought him great happiness, especially when shared with his wife and family. Together they created countless memories, explored new places, and enjoyed the simple pleasure of being together. Though he lived nearly a century, what mattered most was not the number of years he lived, but the love he gave. He will be remembered for his strong work ethic, kind heart, quiet wisdom, devotion to family, and the deep love he carried for his wife throughout his life.
Hassie is survived by his loving children, Blasina E. Howell, Digna Y. Howell, Kerr S. Howell and Jose' Edgar Howell (Debbie); his grandchildren, Kerr S. Howell Jr., Mindy M. Lyons, Jonathan P. Howell, Nickolas R. Howell, Alli R. Earhardt, Benjamin D. Diaz, Ariel E. Howell and Alexis S. Howell; his 18 great-grandchildren; his sisters, Goldie M. Paron and Cheryl A. Perez and many other family members and friends who will miss him dearly. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Maria Emma Howell, the love of his life; his parents, Samuel G. Howell and Leoni E. Howell; his brothers, Samuel G. Howell and Federico A. Jackson.
His family finds comfort in knowing that after a life well lived, he is finally reunited with the woman he loved for 68 years.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a visitation to be held at ST. BERNARD MEMORIAL FUNERAL HOME, 701 W. Virtue St., Chalmette, LA on Saturday, June 13, 2026, from 9:00 AM-11:00 AM. A mass will begin at 11:00 AM. Burial will follow in ST. BERNARD MEMORIAL GARDENS.
