She was a Christian woman who made sure her grandchildren knew the Lord and took them to church, Girls In Action and Vacation Bible School. Her favorite hymns were “Precious Lord” and “How Great Thou Art”. She was married for 35 years to her husband, Herman Hoover Coumes. He passed away in 1976. She loved him and missed him until the day she died. Iris worked hard to help provide for her family. She retired from the National Park Service in January 1980. She loved to share stories of her time there.
She had a very full and enjoyable life. She enjoyed boating, fishing and crabbing. She loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She really loved the times spent with family at the camp in Bay St. Louis. She stayed active joining Crossgates Fitness Center and taking bus trips with the ladies in a group. She joined Elderhostel and traveled to many interesting places. She liked having slumber parties with her sisters (Lina, Edith, Grace, and Zoie). There were lots of laughs and giggles when she got together with her sisters. You never knew what was going to happen or where they would go next. She loved taking care of her house and working in her yard and flower garden.
When her sons were growing up, she always praised them but disciplined them when necessary. When it came to her sons, her granddaughters, great grandchildren or her great great grandchildren, she had no favorites, she loved everyone the same, and made everyone feel like they were her favorite. She was very involved in the lives of her children. She helped raise her grandchildren and enjoyed going on family vacations.
Iris was preceded in death by her mother, Marie Lydia Lee Ramke and father, Edwin Ramke, her husband of 35 years, Herman Hoover Coumes, her brother Otis Ramke and sisters, Zoie Cabral, Edith Blush and Lina Parisi. She is survived by her sons, Herman Hoover Coumes Jr. (Jean) and Ronald William Coumes (June), sister, Grace Ramke, grand daughters Carol Coumes Morrow (Scott) and Suezetta Coumes Moran, great grand children (Cody (Kelly)), Michael, Devin, Matthew, and Jordan) and great great grandchildren (Peyton, Isabella, Gabriella, and Caleb). She is missed by her family and all that knew her.
