It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of James Vaskil Russell, a beloved father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, who left us at the age of 91. He passed away peacefully, joining his beloved wife, Nell Jobe Russell, who preceded him in death in 2019 after 65 years of marriage. James was a loving father of Richard Gordan Russell (Debbie), Randall Tracy Russell, Reagan Scott Russell (Crystal), Jamie Alexis Russell Harrison (William “Mickey”) and the late Robin Arlene Russell. Proud grandfather of Jennifer Lynn Russell Lombard (Parker), Allison Renee Russell Chaisson (Joey), Eric James Russell (Haley), Sarah Elizabeth Russell Galladora (Brandon), William “Mick” Harrison III and Mindy Nicole Harrison; great grandfather of Hudson Parker Lombard, Harper Paige Lombard, Cooper Joseph Chaisson, MacKenzie Lynn Chaisson, Genevieve Cheree’ Russell, Easton James Russell, Theo James Galladora, Levi Michael Galladora, Atlas Scott Galladora and Daniel Jacob Blees; brother of Carolyn Russell Cook (the late Lynn); uncle of Phoebe Cook. He preceded in death by his parents, James Virgel Russell and Lenora Kathrin Norton Russell; his aunt Ora Norton Deerfoot (Chief Joe).
James was a lifelong resident of St. Bernard Parish and a cherished member of his community. Throughout his life, he was devoted to his family and his work. A proud father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, he cherished every moment spent with his loved ones, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who brought him endless joy. His family was his greatest treasure, and he took great pride in watching them grow. Professionally, he dedicated 65 years to his career as an engineer with Freeport McMoRan, working on the prestigious Freeport Indonesia copper and gold project. His passion for his work was unparalleled, and he loved every aspect of it. Outside of his career, James had a deep love for history, particularly American and Native American history. He was fascinated by the stories of the past, and the legacy of his Uncle Joe Deerfoot, an Apache Indian and Chief of his tribe, held a special place in his heart. He also enjoyed collecting model cars and planes, finding peace and satisfaction in his hobbies. For many years, James faithfully served as an elder at Chalmette Church of Christ, where he played an instrumental role in the spiritual life of the congregation. In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, his devotion to his church and community was evident as he worked tirelessly alongside others to help rebuild the church that had been devastated by the storm. He was a man who lived life with purpose, devotion, and a love for those around him. James will be greatly missed by his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a visitation to be held at CHALMETTE CHURCH of CHRIST, 200 De La Ronda, Chalmette, LA on Saturday, January 25, 2025, from 9:00 AM-11:00 PM.
