Jeannette “Jean” Robino Callais, age 79, a native and resident of St. Bernard, LA, passed away on Wednesday, September 9, 2020. Jean was born and raised in St. Bernard Parish where she spent nearly her entire life with her husband of 62 years, Gary Callais, Sr. From their early days of trapping in Eastern St. Bernard, establishing and running Callais Food Store, and raising their two sons Alvin and Gary, to their years of enjoying retirement ─ much of which was spent watching the horses race at the Fairgrounds, taking their yearly road trip to Las Vegas, and entertaining all of their grandchildren with trips to the zoo, aquarium, and movies every summer ─ there was barely a time you would find them apart. Jean was the epitome of a kind heart. She could always be counted on to lend a helping hand and have an open door, whether it was caring for family members when they were sick or regularly welcoming over 40 people into her home every year for Christmas dinner. She was always there for her loved ones with a kind word, a birthday card, a call to check-up on them, or a pot full of red gravy, seafood gumbo, fried shrimp, or her infamous cauliflower patties. The joy of her life was spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and every life she touched is better for it. Jean is survived by her husband, Gary Callais, Sr., her two sons, Alvin (Lori Callais) and Gary Callais, Jr. (Cheryl Gross); brother, Johnny; former daughter in law, Michelle Suthers; grandchildren, Kerri, Amanda, Josh, Kaitlyn, Jenna, and Tori; great-grandchildren, Macie, Josh Jr., Mia, Olivia, Gunner, DJ, Dominic, and Levi James. She is preceded in death by her father, Antoine Robino; mother, Evelyn Hebert Robino; and brother, Larry Robino. A visitation will be held at ST. BERNARD MEMORIAL FUNERAL HOME, 701 W. VIRTUE STREET, in Chalmette, Louisiana, on Thursday, September 17, 2020; immediate family from 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM, with visitation for other relatives and friends from 11:00 AM - 1:00 PM. A funeral service in Jean’s honor will begin at 1:00 PM. She will be laid to eternal rest in St. Bernard Catholic Cemetery, 2805 Bayou Road, in St. Bernard, Louisiana.

Cousins Jean and Gary and Alvin and Gary have been part of my family’s lives forever. Dad and Jean were cousins who enjoyed a close friendship. Once us children left the nest, our parents continued to be part of each other’s lives - right up to my parents’ passing, which they were both present for to witness when each got their wings. I will always cherish those days and the special bond they shared.
I already miss my chats with cousin Jean who continued to check in on us as sort of our surrogate mom. She was a wonderful lady.
Our deepest condolences to the entire family for the emptiness you feel from your loss. We love you.

Mrs Jean and Mr Gary were always very loving to all, from the day I met them, more than 40 years ago. I’m grateful for having them in my life and sad to see her go. Fond memories will be forever in our hearts and minds.
