Public servant, John A. Metzler, Jr. “Metz,” age 68, died peacefully on Friday, April 29, 2016 while surrounded by his family. He is survived by his two sisters, Lorrie Metzler, MD and Lynn Metzler Irby (Ty Irby); two nephews, Drew Irby and Michael Brenckle II; his uncle, Michael A. McNulty, Jr. and his aunt, Dorothy Schaefer; along with many cousins, relatives and friends. He is predeceased by his parents, John A. Metzler, Sr. and Rita Mae McNulty Metzler; his aunt, Joycelyn Molinary and uncle, Wilfred Metzler, Jr. John, a native of New Orleans and life-long resident of St. Bernard Parish, LA, served the people in both the public and private sectors for over four decades. He distinguished himself as a public official in St. Bernard Parish as an elected St. Bernard Parish Police Juror and President of the St. Bernard Police Jury. He also served as Director of Administration for the St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office. He worked at the St. Bernard Parish Hospital at its inception, and held positions with the St. Bernard Parish Government, including Purchasing Agent, Director of Parks and Recreation, and most recently, Executive Assistant to the Parish President. In the private sector, Johnny was the general manager of Ernst Cafe, co-owner/operator of Barristers Patio Bar & Grill, co-owner of Johnny B Goods, a partner in Fat Boy Productions and Who Dat Spring Water. Metz graduated from Chalmette High School in 1965 where he was voted Most School Spirited. He earned his Bachelor’s degree from the University of Southern Mississippi in Administrative Recreation. Metz’ community service consisted of volunteer coaching for baseball, basketball and football. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the St. Bernard Battered Women’s Shelter, St. Jude, the Wounded Warrior Project or have Masses said in his memory. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a visitation to be held at ST. BERNARD MEMORIAL FUNERAL HOME, 701 W. Virtue St., Chalmette, LA on Monday, May 9th from 9:00AM – 12:00PM, followed by a service in the chapel beginning at 12:00PM. Burial will be private.
