It is with heartfelt sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved matriarch, Joyce Mary Hammer Azaretta, who departed this life peacefully on March 5, 2025, at the age of 95. Born on January 4, 1930, in Uptown New Orleans. Her early years were shaped by the strength, joy, and resilience of a community that nurtured her gentle spirit and unwavering values. After marrying Paul Azaretta, she settled on Delery Street in the 9th Ward, where they began a new chapter together. It was there that she built a home filled with warmth, laughter, and the aroma of Sunday meals that brought family and friends together. What made Joyce's life so full were the deep bonds she formed with her neighbors, who quickly became her lifelong friends—the Miller, Cassous (Freddie & Jo Ellen), Luc, Carambats, Peltier, Ruiz, and Treadway families. Together, they built more than a community—they built a family. For over 20 years, the ladies of these families gathered weekly for card games, sharing stories, support, and an enduring sisterhood that stood the test of time.
Joyce is survived by her daughters, Jean Shepherd (the late Billy) and Vickie Cochran (the late Terry); her grandchildren, Laura Counts, Brad Cochran and Brian Cochran; her great grandchildren, Tiffany Poche Watson, Cody Counts (Hannah), Falyn Zulli, Allison Cochran and Cameron Cochran; her great great grandchildren, David Watson, Ella Watson and Gemma Marcantel. She is preceded in death by her husband, Paul Azaretta; her grandchild, Darryl Marcantel and her great grandchild, Kerry Poche IV; her parents, Florence Whitney and Joseph Hammer; her sisters, Myrtis Bangs and Rita Wehrlin.
A celebration of her remarkable life will be held at a later date. The family would like to thank all who have expressed love and support during this time. She leaves behind a legacy of friendship, love, and devotion that will continue to inspire those who knew her.
